Future Nationals Thoughts - 06/22/08 01:05 AM

First of all, I think the news about Orlando is awesome. It sounds like Disney is going to go all out and build one heck of an impressive bowling stadium (100 lanes!).
Orlando and Reno are going to be locks every third year. Now, on the other side of this great news coin is the fact that only one other city every three years will be able to host the national tourney. It would be nice if it could be a midwestern-ish state that every third year. I think for a while you will see a great interest in this new set up, but after a while I'm sure several will find that it is too costly to make the long trips and maybe even start to become a little redundant going to the same cities two out of every three years.
I'm not a "nay-sayer", I'm just playing devil's advocate.
I know of people who no longer bowl in nationals now because it seems like they are always so far away.
All in all, this deal down in Florida is a BIG DEAL in the world of bowling. It is going to be impressive. I would just like to see that third year location be somewhere in the middle states (the states from Colorado to Ohio, Texas to Minnesota, for example)to keep everybody interested and coming back year after year.
Thank you USBC and let's keep 'em coming to Nationals.

Corpus Christi was great, they had the beach and really good food.
San Antonio would be cool, Minneapolis has the mall of America, that would be alright, Chicago has all kinds of neat stuff, so does Cleveland, Cincinnati has Kings Island and good food, Kansas City has Worlds of fun and good food and casinos.

If you are talking about having it in the middle of nowhere, then the three people that would be inconvenienced enough to not go should just stay home. I am tired of traveling to the middle of nowhere and the whole entire town shuts it's doors at 6pm. If it was not for the Casino at Batton rouge, we would have starved to death on the weekend, the entire town shut down, the same could be said about Billings, if it were not for outback or perkins we wouldn't have had anywhere to eat, that just SUCKED!

I have been to small towns and lived in Iowa for the better part of a year when I was a kid, I think that helped me out the most when I was bed ridden for 4 months this past winter with my knee surgeries and kidney surgery, I think that the thousands of people that don't live in these small towns would appreciate not having the most interesting part of their trip be the view out of the window.

By the way Kleen, welcome to the site, not ranting at you, I am ranting at the selection committee.

In general, I agree with Jim. Larger venues with outside attractions are preferable to me. {My favorite is Reno} Small towns are not necessarily bad...if they were, people wouldn't live there....they just don't satisfy everyone. However, to spend over $1,000 and many hours of travel for a 3-4 day "experience" has to have something more interesting than 3 sets of bowling under sometimes onerous conditions.n If a mini-vacation is worthwhile it has to offer something else. I personally wasn't enamored of Syracuse or Billings and bilateral knee replacements in December kept me from ABQ...but Vegas next year is definite and I look forward to some places in the future that are not whistle stops.

A National Tournament location will have a much higher attraction with outside venues. Personally, I prefer the locations with casinos and night life. I have no children to go to Disney, but that would attract a lot of others.

Believe me, it was no fun being stuck in a hotel in Corpus Christie on a rainy week, and the Gambling Barge was down for maintenance. Yeah, they had the beach and Padre Island, but who goes to the beach in the rain?

At least Corpus had some awesome food, and there was a gambling cruise. I spent most of my time in Billings hoping the volcano at Yellowstone would erupt and kill me.

In Corpus, we stayed on Padre Island and drove in. That was great. We rented a townhouse. That is the way to travel. I didn't get a chance to go to Baton Rouge but my teams stayed in New Orleans and drove the 80 miles back and forth. They still talk about that trip.

I am up in the air about Orlando. It is nice that the tourney won't be bouncing around all over the place. After this past weekend, the traveling caravan that will be going with me (not including teammates) is up to 15. The wife is already talking about doing a Disney Land/Sea adventure. I can see the dollar signs adding up now smile

In order to get the tourney to the Midwest, a city has to put in a bid to the USBC. I sent an e-mail in a couple of years ago to the USBC asking about Chicago hosting again since the first ever Open was held in Chicago. They told me that the city has to submit a bid and have convention space open from the end of Jan to the end of July and have alleys close for the side tourneys.

The only cities that are going to submit bids are those that are looking for tourism money. Chicago gets that on it's own. St. Louis I think would be a great spot. Minneapolis would be nice but because of the weather up there, there may be a lot of cancellations early on. Wichita had 2011 until something happened with their bid. It is still not clear on what happened. A lot of my teammates were happy when they lost it though.

I would like to meet Gordon Vadakin, but I doubt he would be there greeting people as they got off the plane. Wichita, probably has a good place to get a nice steak, but I could see myself watching the paint peel in a dingy motel watching cars drive by the window while I wait for my next squad time the following day. I would also be getting an ear full from my wife about how she is never coming on another bowling trip with me again. Sorry Wichita, but if I never step foot there for a tournament I will be happy.

That is probably the only way they could get a lot of people to come to that tourney. My wife tells me that I could have fun in a showbox as long as there is alcohol though laugh
