2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 02/13/16 10:56 PM

It's almost time to gather in Reno for the 2016 Open Championship. What date is everyone going? Would be nice to meet up and say Hi.

I'll be there April 9 and 10.

Will be competing July 2 & 3.

I wish I could go this year, but too much going on personally to make it work. Next year... is it in Reno again?

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 02/15/16 10:40 PM

Hoping so. Goal would be for my son (who will be 18 then), myself and my dad (who lives a two hour drive down the hill) to be all bowling together for next year. That would mean one of my family dream events being checked off.

I will be in Reno the 19th through the 26th of March, stay at Circus and bowl the 23rd and 24th. I go to Nats as often as I can but have never performed well...mostly it is a vacation where I can see friends I only see once per year, hang, drink, and laugh and make people laugh.

Thanks Bill. We have 8 teams going compared to only 2 last year to El Paso. With Vegas being even closer, I imagine we may have even more teams. If you don't have a team next year, let me know and I'll ask our organizer if he'll let you join us.

goobee, I've usually started a thread for nationals around when they start, and, while I use the thread to post updates, forum members have always been free to talk about their appearances there. smile

dan, I'll keep this in mind. I hear people talk about going but they all say they are in groups that have been going for for years. I've never heard of someone putting that many groups together. Thanks Bill

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 02/24/16 08:52 PM

This will be my third year bowling. I had a good debut in 2014, but was downright awful last year. Looking at the patterns, to my eyes, they look very similar to last year. I've done a whole year of reflecting on what I did wrong last year, so hopefully I'm better prepared this year.

I take to the Lanes April 30th and May 1st.

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 02/24/16 09:28 PM

Not as flat as last year it appears. In fact, it may favor lefties playing outside for both Team and Singles/Doubles as they have a few more feet of oil. 2015, the sides were mirror images, 2016 it's not.

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 02/25/16 12:18 AM

Yeah, patterns are rather similar to last year. I shot pretty well last year. Hoping for a little better this go around.

Will start getting some practice in on the patterns. Have quite some time to go before we go.

I dunno. Last year, the Motiv guy was really pushing the Motiv "Graffiti Tag" on me. That was the last thing I needed, a flippy ball for those conditions.

Yeah I hear you. I'm thinking about the Hammer Nail. Looks like its going to be alot dryer of a shot this year than it was 2 years ago.

My 1980's vintage Faball Nail is making the trip with me this year. Worse case scenario, I'll use it as both strike and 10 pin ball.

I don't know about that. The two patterns are averaging over 27 mils of oil. That's a lot of oil. Not to mention its Brunswick Ice, which tends to play slick and not break down as quickly.

Its going to take a strong modern ball with some surface to get the ball to try to slow down and go through the proper transitions. Without the right surface, you'll have way to much skid and lack of control as the ball exits the pattern. That leads to misses outside never picking up, and misses inside flipping hard.

Of course, with more than 20 feet of crisp and clean backends, total hook won't be hard to find. Most equipment will hook. But its the control you'll be missing with weaker equipment.

I got a seat this year for April 23, 24 - friend asked me if I wanted to go, guy who already paid had to back out. YAY - free entry! LOL

first time I've gone in years (in fact, last time I went was when it was still ABC . . . so. . . 2004?)

Looks like no big news coming out of Reno score wise. I still have been watching the live streams on youtube. A lot of movment still on the back ends.

On other news I bowled the Montana state usbc open tournment. In team event I shot 686 with my highest game ever 274. Fell apart in doubles with a 490. 560 in singles. Are team is in first in team event.

David, I took a quick look around, I did not see 900 Global amongst the vendors by the lanes. I'll be back tomorrow and see if there are anymore on a different floor.

Take a look in the Storm booth. Might find them there, now that they're under Storm's umbrella.

Thanks for the update. If I cant get a 900 global my second option was a hammer nail/spike what ever its called. Judging be your practice, still sounds like tropical breeze is going to be it this tourney.

I'll write a full recap when I get home tomorrow. However, I spoke to the Storm people today and they confirmed that 900 Global was a separate entity and did not have a booth.

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 04/12/16 05:46 PM

Here's a quick recap of my experience at Nationals this week. Please excuse grammatical and spelling errors. We rolled back into town 2:00 AM this morning and I'm still a bit groggy.

Practice Session (Friday 10:00 AM)

Lanes were freshly prepped before our session with the Team layout.
Balls thrown outside of 10 did not recover
Stronger balls over reacted
Found a shot similar to my normal THS line, standing 25 and targeting 15. As long as I didn't miss right, I had about a 2 to 3 boards error margin (to the left) and was around the pocket with the Blend 10 OSW. The ball was reading early and had a nice predictable continuous smooth arc.

Take-away strategy: Use Blend 10 OSW, adjust line as necessary, step down to Motiv Venom Panic if necessary for more length and angle to pocket.

Team Session (Saturday 5:00 PM)

Take everything I said above and throw it out the window. Although the practice pair was laid out the same, just about every characteristic was different. Anything outside of 13 failed to recover. My smooth arc from the day before was gone. My ball skidded about 2/3's of the way down before rolling and then turning sharply left. I wound up having to stand about 35 and targeting 15. Margin for error.....zip, zero, zilch, nada, the big donut! Miss the arrow by 1 board and I had either a wash or was through the nose.

First game was horrible, I spent just about the entire game looking for a line. Finding the pocket was not the problem, carry was. The second game was decent, third game was forgettable as the lane had broken down and I lost my line. With the snappy back end, chopping was a problem and I missed a number of easy spares.

Singles/Doubles (Sunday 1:00 PM)

With the ball skid problem, I changed my game plan and brought my most aggressive ball, the Mastermind Einstein. I did not bring it for Team thinking that I didn't need it. I found a line immediately with it, standing 28 and targeting 13. This really shows how much oil volume there is on the lane, my most aggressive ball only needed a compact arc to the pocket. Once again, finding the pocket was not the problem, carry was. By the end of Doubles, my ball was hitting nose high so I moved a couple boards to the left and played the same target. The ball slid by and left a wash. I moved my feet back over 1 board to the right, the ball again slid by. Contrary to what I always do, I decided to move 3 boards over to the right, BAM, I was back in the pocket. This was good for a game and a half. A this point, the lanes were broken down enough for me to play my original line with the OSW.

Same as the previous day, finding the pocket was easier than carrying strikes. Chopping and ball deflection were also issues.

Personal Thoughts

This was a frustrating Nationals for me. For me, practice hurt more than it helped as the practice pair was nothing like the actual tournament pair. Obviously no pair of lanes will be the same but should they have been this different? Are we not are paying $150 for similar conditions?

Positives

I improved from last year +51 pins overall
I was able to hit the pocket often (carry was another matter)
I picked up 100% of my 10 pins
I won 2 brackets (some may not consider this a positive seeing how much I paid into brackets)

If I had to do it again, I would go aggressive from the beginning. My weak balls just did a lot of thrashing in the front and didn't do what I wanted.

Great review, I'm so confused on the pattern. Everyone is having trouble so far your about the 10th person I know. Sounds like I just need to go, have fun, and not lose all my money in the casinos. The one person I know who had success said he had to throw the ball harder on a tight line.

Everyone is going to struggle on this pattern. Its brutally tough. There's a lot of oil, and its almost dead flat. There's is almost no miss room to hit the pocket, let alone try to throw strikes. Scores will be low for everyone, even the guys that win.

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 04/25/16 12:16 PM

Did team event at 5 on Saturday and Dbl/Sgl at 9 on Sunday. Getting there was an adventure - My wife and I drove up hwy 395 from SoCal on Friday. We get past Bishop (about half-way) and started up the hill and the temp dropped from about 70 down to 30 in 20 minutes. Rain turned to snow. Normally, I don't care about snow - I grew up in the mtns of Washington and went to college north of Calgary AB, but we are on SoCal tires which meant I started to skate around - so turn around and go back to Bishop. Next morning, passes were still closed (they opened around 9) so we went through Nevada - pretty drive, and only a half hour longer. But boy - tired. Got there, checked in to our hotel in Virginia City and then headed to the center to bowl.

Was BRUTAL. Started out Saturday sticking badly. Swapped out soles which meant I was skating. My wife ran to the Storm booth and got me a couple soles to fill the gap and, by the 8th frame of the first game, I was now okay with my feet and had to calm down.

It wasn't a whole lot of help. My typical game is down 5 or down 10 - which meant I was flirting with an absolute out of bounds. Outside 7 was totally out of bounds. I was able, for a while, to take my dull MarvelS and roll straight down 5 and it would flip and roll in - game 2 was 223 - but when that line broke down, I couldn't slide it left as I'd then grab lines from others, and I couldn't move my feet left because I'd be throwing right at the out of bounds. Day 1, 106 (soles suck), 223, 149.

Day 2 was just bad. I started with what I'd figured out Saturday, going down 5 and hoping I might make myself a little bit of a wall. Bunch of spares (which I'm VERY proud of - we all were more proud of our spares than our strikes, honestly) and 150. second game was also pretty decent, and 176. Really, if FELT like these two games were HUGE, LOL. Third game, my little line had gone completely away so I tried going to my A game, which is down 10 - that was OK, but several others were in and around that so it didn't last long. Splits, washouts . . . 133.

Fourth game was strike or nothing - 143. Bah. One spare, 10th. Game 5, moved WAY left and used my Crux. Slowed it way way down and just let the ball flare just before the pocket. picked up a few spares, missed a 10, 170. Game 6 and I'm just done. 121.

Lessons? Get on a team that will work together. Everyone just bowled as individuals so we were crossing each other up, nobody worked together to create some friction. . . Start spares with only plastic - the hook was so unreliable that I couldn't get to anything. If I had been able to hit my spares, I would have been MUCH better off - strike for show, spare for dough.

Yeah, same here. There were no easy spares, I sweated 5 pins if you can believe it. brickwall

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 04/26/16 10:54 AM

That certainly is brutal mmalsed. Surprised you had so much trouble on the lanes.

Is the pattern playing any different than last year? Can't remember those of you that have recapped if you went last year to El Paso.

One thing I am working on this summer, is spare shooting with my plastic at everything. Not bowling in league, so will have to get my own practice in to do that. I have played around with it and don't have trouble doing that, but just not as consistent as I am with my reactive balls at some leaves.

Been a few years since I have hit Nationals. Miss it. My son will be 18 next go-around. Sincerely hoping that my dad, wife, myself and my son will be able to do this for the first time as a foursome with one other.

Not to be ignorant, but where will the event be held in 2017? Vegas? Reno?

Thanks everyone.

2017 will be in Vegas at the brand new South Point Bowling Plaza. 2018 heads east to Syracuse, NY.

I'm hitting the road tomorrow, bright and early, for about a 14 hour drive to Reno. My group includes my wife, and my parents, and it is indeed a great trip when the family can go together. We look forward to it every year.

I'll be in late Thursday. Friday I plan to bowl the Bowler's Journal and the 40 Frame Game. Saturday I'll be watch McNiel and the Lakers for the second year in a row, hoping to watch them make history again. I bowl Team Saturday at 8pm, and D/S Sunday at 9am.

I'll be reporting frequently. I love this tournament. I'm a junkie for it. Can't wait to get on the road.

Re: 2016 Nationals Attendance Thread - 05/01/16 10:30 PM

Here's the short recap of my 2016 tournament.

Bowled the Bowler's Journal. Shot 231 first game, but after we switched pairs, never got lined up again, and settled for 558. Didn't feel like the lanes were all that hard.

Bowled the team practice on the showcase lanes. Had a great look. Threw a lot of strikes.

Team event, I started well with only a couple splits. 184 and 187 to start. Then I start game three with 9- 9- 9- and finish with a 148 for 519. Irritated with the last game, but not overly upset. Lanes weren't that hard in my opinion.

Doubles and Singles my partner and I were on a different pair than our team. The four other guys we were bowling with had no strategy and the lanes got trickier and trickier ever game. I shot 552 in doubles with a motivating 221 last game. Singles was an awful grind, finishing with 485.

I had a 1556 All-Events, which is bad, but better than last year. I personally didn't think the lanes were all that tough to start, and I'm surprised the great teams are having so much trouble making them nice. The backends are much tamer than last year, and the track has a nice shot that the average bowler would be very comfortable shooting...just don't miss your breakpoint.

I head home tomorrow. 12 hour drive.

I had a couple of 190's. But never broke 500 in any event. I was surprised about the prices in the pro shops, never seen them sell stuff for that cheap. I picked up a bowling ball and about 4 shirts. Has for the casino's they really didn't have the deals like they did a couple of years ago. I guess the highlight of my trip was the wife hitting a slot machine for 600 bucks. It was a silent ride back home. Couple of my teammates said they would think about Las Vegas. There still feel pretty down right now.
