lst League - 02/04/09 12:41 PM

Hi,(1st post)
Been bowling recreationally on and off many years. Wife and I getting back into bowling and decided to join a league. I just bought a new ball and really can't know what my average then handicap would be. Before the new ball and was around 140-150 with many higher games. This weekend think I figured out new ball and stated with 100 then 202 and 178 after making adjustment.
The league is a doubles fun league that is barely holding on with only a few teams left. I'm just going to bowl my best and not worry about too high of a handicap status as it sounds like it will be established after 2 weeks. I actually feel like I may do really well, but we'll see. Hope to bowl in 4 person fun league for summer if we enjoy this doubles event. Wife is consistant 120-130 bowler.
Any comments?
Thanks

welcome to the sport (well sort of since you have been doing it) and to the site. You guys should enjoy the league thing if you enjoy bowling in general. I love it and can't wait for my league nights to roll around every week. What kind of ball did you get?

I got a Brunswick Copperhead. It's a 15lb ball up from a 14lb I was given by a friend to get started a few years back. I adjusted all the way left and the balls has a much better hook than the old one. Tried for 2 days to consistently throw center left outward and hook back into pocket but not for me. As a lefty throw 1st/2nd arrow left and ball hooks right into pocket now. actually watched pro bowling sunday to study them, and a lefy woman was bowling and helped to pick up on her delivery.

That lefty woman has great form, and looks almost identical to Parker Bohn III. Her name is Shannon Pluhowsky and she has great form overall. I think its great that you are watching the PBA events to study the game, it comes on every sunday at 1 pm EST (a few times change to 2) so you should watch every weekend if you can to get an idea of what the proper form looks like. Just remember that these guys and gals are experts in what they are doing so their form might not work for you. Just don't try to play someone elses game and you will be ok.

Thank you for the advice. Her delivery allowed me to recognize it was ok to deliver straight then hook in and not throw outward and hook in. The guy who finished 2nd was just so extreme in his delivery and couldn't ever think of getting to that level.

Tomorrow night will tell me where I'm at- looking forward to it. also was extremely fortunate to have an excellent pro shop nearby who really took the time to work with me fitting and choosing ball- he actually wore me out bowling with old and new ball. Just added to the introduction to the sport the correct way.
Thanks again.

I have not been fortunate enough to break 200 but that could and hopefull will change tonight! I bowl with my fiance and another couple who we are friends with in a 4 person fun league. We have a blast every wednesday night. Nice to have you here and good luck.

Straight and in is just fine, watch Norm Duke and Walter Ray Williams Jr. on youtube, you will notice both play straight up the boards and both are at the top of the career PBA Titles list (WRW 1st with 45, Norm 5th with 31).

The big thing is giving yourself the best chance to score, don't try to beat someone with a game that is not yours when you could play somewhere else and play great. Sure it looks good when you hook the entire lane (Harmon is who you were refering too) but looking good doesn't give you titles, and Liz Johnson and Norm Duke showed that this weekend. Liz Johnson was throwing the 2nd Dimension and it was moving about 2 boards overall but she goes 5 for 5 strikes.

remember, straighter is greater. smile the big hook doesn't always mean the better bowler.
