Scratch league with low team cap

Scratch league with low team cap - 02/19/13 10:45 PM

One of the better centers in town is hosting a scratch trios league this summer. I'd really like to bowl in it, but I'm a little concerned that the team cap is 615. With a cap that low, it hardly even seems like a scratch league.

What are your thoughts? I don't know if there is any money involved, but I feel like sharks are going to start circling when they see such a low cap.

That cap wouldn't work here- you might as well bowl handicap if you're going to cap it at 615. 645-660 maybe, and there will be money involved. No one bowls scratch for a trophy.

The big scratch league in the fall is capped at 880 for four, and people complain about that. 615 sound kind of ludicrous to me. It basically excludes real scratch bowlers. I'll have to get more details as to the money involved, but I'm still interested. I want to bowl scratch, and other than a series of tournaments I'm going to bowl, that's the only other option over the summer.

A 615 cap for trios sounds like an "entry level" scratch league. Is it possible they are referring to sport averages, and they are planning to put down a sport shot for the league?

That thought crossed my mind, but there is no mention of that on the flyer. I'll be there Friday night to ask some questions, and I'll add that to the list.

really? entry level? That's 205 per bowler. I bowled in a foursome scratch where cap was 760 - 190 per.

It just made us be creative with who we got. The really big bowlers couldn't overload a team - they would have to get someone low to remain under the cap.

I would look at it being really nice. You're not going to have a team full of 220 bowlers - but you COULD have four 205s and likely do extremely well. A single 225 would just need two more 190s.

Really, it seems reasonable.

If it's too high, then what's the point?

Scratch is scratch. no matter what your team cap. So you can have a 230 guy with two 160 guys, but those 160 guys are going to have a hard time getting points against a more balanced team.

I bowled and enjoyed a 585 trios for a couple summers. It was a great way for middle to high average bowlers to bowl in the scratch environment.

We also have a long standing ladies league of 475 trios.

oh yes, scratch is scratch, but when you make the entering avg low, you make deliberate accommodation for mid-level (or even low-level) bowlers.

Yes, a foursome of 180s (on a 720 entering) can win, but it's not easy. I tried that (I was 180, got three others between 175 and 185) and we were right at 720. We won the league but only in the last week and only by a few points. It was the most competitive league I've ever been in, and it was that way every single league.

YMMV, of course! laugh

It's a league for 200-ish bowlers who don't want to bowl in handicap leagues and start each game giving 120-150 pins to the other team before rolling a ball.

The big scratch league around here is 850 cap for a four man team. You take out the 235 average of the anchor and you have a 615 cap for the 3 teammates. That's not too far off from what your league is. True "scratch" bowlers can do the league, but they can't team up together and win 1st place at the meeting.

I can tell you, I wouldn't bowl that league. Heck, I wouldn't qualify for that league and wouldn't even try for it.
