I discovered something interesting when I went to Nationals. The Storm/Roto Grip booth had balls on display used by Wes Malott, Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Ryan Shafer, and Jeff Carter. I believe Wes is 6'3", while Norm Duke is 5'7". Yet, Wes's span is much shorter than Norm's, like it might be closer to a semi-fingertip.

I think Wes uses a more modern relaxed span. He has a huge gap between his hand and the ball. Also, you would think that Wes would have bigger hands but you never know.. he may just have small hands. I would like to see the spans of all the professional bowlers. I would bet that most of the top bowlers have shorter spans.

Although it would work against most ball mfgrs, I would really like to see what drill pattern, span, and distances the pros use on which type of ball. Right now, if Wes uses the newest Roto Grip ball, everyone buys it. But, if you saw how he drilled an older ball differently then yours, I bet bowlers would change their grip.

Then only if we could throw the ball the same way smile

Jeff Carter's entire arsenal is on his site, and the Storm/Roto sites show the exact drillings of all of their balls that are used on the show.

I've been watching some slow-mo video of Wes and Tommy Jones release. I am really surprised on how much they ARE NOT underneath the ball. I always thought you want to come from underneath the ball to get those revs.. I guess all that does is make you hit up on the ball probably robbing you of revs. If you use their "turn the door [censored]" release and are more under the ball I guess that would just give you a larger degree of rotational axis??

I think a good thing to focus on is trying to keep your fingers at or a little lower than the equator of the ball.

You're also right in the fact that a lot of times, cupping to the extent that you see a lot of guys do around town is counter productive. Cupping tends to lock your hand in the ball, and without uncoiling your wrist like a yo-yo, you're going to have to work pretty hard to get much on the ball.

I can tell you that Kenny Simard has one of the largest spans on tour and probably around. I am pretty sure Randy said he is up over 6 inches in span. Talk about power, its like throwing a marble for him.

When other bowlers can palm a bowling ball, it will be time for me to quit.

I checked it out, http://www.jeffcarterbowling.com/Arsenal2.html. Pretty cool, 40 balls in his current arsenal! Interestingly, at least 30 of his layouts fall between 5 to 5.5 by 3 to 4. Nearly an even split of pins above and below fingers with a few drilled through by the finger holes.
