Why does it not sound if a bowling ball rolls past the foul line? At first, I thought that it may be based on weight, but then I've seen open bowlers trigger the foul light with those bowling ball ramps, and with their hands (kids playing around by touching the foul line on purpose).

I think the difference is that a ball can pass the "beam" so fast that it does not set off the buzzer. But a foot tends to cross the line and stay there, or at least stay there longer then a moving ball would. But a ball can set off a foul light.

One of my friends releases the ball a good foot from the foul line (with a pretty high release point, too) and never set off the light. Weird...

My coach always rolls balls from the back of the approach on spares, and I've seen someone that releases the ball a good 3-5 feet from the foul line. I'd have to agree with Erin that the sensor is more related to time or speed.

not very well. I've seen them work so poorly that you can be a foot behind the line and it goes off. They are tricky little things.

Fortunately, the old centers in my area either have updated foul sensors, or none at all.

A lot of centers do not turn the foul lights on. Then when they have a sanctioned league, simply forget. They are so in the habit of NOT having the foul lights on, that the staff (most of whom do not bowl and could care less) never give it a second thought when league starts. So while a ball might trigger the sensor, you have to be sure they're on first. :=)

My main center leaves the lights off. There are people in my unsanctioned summer league that would end up with games of 0 if they left them on.
