Currently, I live and study in Armenia (you know, a little country somewhere in Middle East aaand I've lived in Texas several years before.
I started to bowl there and it was really fun Not in leagues, of course, just open bowling, but I spent a lot of time bowling there.
Anyway, I'm now back to Armenia and now as part of my study I had to write research paper about some sport. The paper topic is about sport Psychology and sociology.
I choose a bowling topic, because I like it very much, but there is not so many bowlers here to make a good statistics and they do not bowl regularly, just on occasions. So I'm trying to collect some data for the paper using the Internet
I would be thankful if you submit the following data (probably it's better to send it via private message and not as a reply – but it's up to you).
It's only 10 questions! And I need at least 70-100 responses to get a good statistical precision, so please spend a few minutes and answer the following questions.
Demography questions:
1) Your age range: under 18, 18-25, 25-35, 35-45, 45-55, 55+ 2) Your sex: male/female 3) Your ethnic group: Caucasian/white, afro american, Hispanic, other 4) Household income: under 40k, 40-70k, 70+ (you can omit this one if you want – just put n/a here) 5) If you are out of USA, please write your country as well.
6) What is your most problematic/most hurting/ problem in your game? I'm not writing the possible cases – because this will screw up the results. Write the problem description on your own, please. (Please also score this problem – 0 – it is not a problem for me at all, 5 – it's the most terrible problem I ever faced
7) What single change in your game can have the greatest impact on your score, if you could apply it? This can be anything – even if it's totally unrealistic for you now. (Also, please give a score – 0 – it will have no impact, 5 – it will totally rocket up my game)
8) Do you consult with the coach about your game? How often? How useful you feel such coaching sessions ? (0 – it doesn't change my game at all, 5 – it had a greatest impact on my bowling)
9) Do you have the goal set up for a this or next season (like – improve my avg score by 10 points by the end of year, improve the swing, improve my timing and so on)? How you feel about that goal? (0 – I don't think I will achieve it, 5 – I'm sure I will achieve it)
10) Do you have problems concentrating during the game? (0 – everything distracts me while I bowl, 5 – nothing can break my concentration, I do not care whats going around – I totally concentrated on the bowling)
One more – if you would like to tell me more about problems you have while bowling – you are welcome.
Yes, I red the whole topic about pet peeves My own pet peeve is a people who do not obey lane courtesy and children who run around.
Thanks in advance!
I NEED Your answers, so please spend a few minutes and answer these 10 questions.

Welcome to the site, I don't bowl any more (injury), but I still coach, I might be of some assistance in helping you form your questions better:
#6. What aspect of your game do you feel you need to improve on the most?
#7. What physical skill do you think would make you a better bowler, doesn't have to be one you think you can actually achieve.
#8. Do you consult a coach? a. If so how often? b. How much has coaching helped? (0-5)
#9. What are your goals for the up coming season? a. How likely are you to achieve this goal? (0 not likely - 5 it's a sure thing)
10 can stay as is.
After a bowler learns the physical game and can repeat shots routinely the game is about 90% mental, and Psychology goes into every aspect and motion of it from the time you walk in the door until you leave and even after that with visualization you can even practice without being at the lanes, I do.
Good Luck with your paper and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Welcome to the forum! regarding children who run around, they are only doing what their parents taught or allowed them to do, so see the parents. Often, the parents are new to bowling and would appreciate tips such as ettiquette on the approach. If you tell them, then they can tell their kids and remain the parental figure.
1. 55+ 2. Male 3. White 4. middle class 5. USA
6. concentration when I either have to go first or go second versus someone on a lane near (not next to) me. Sometimes I just walk away from the lane for 10 seconds and then turn around and go back to the approach.
7. Pin action - i.e. getting messengers on the 5 and 10 pin. Sometimes I get good pin action and sometimes not, depending on the ball and the way I throw it. (3) Aim - Aim is the name of the game (4)
8. coach - no. (4)
9. work on my releases. Consistency in delivery is one of the key elements. Getting better but not there yet. (4)
10. Yes. I can never zone out the surroundings.(4)

1. 25-35 2. Male 3. White 4. Under 40k 5. USA
6. During my armswing I help the ball at two specific points which causes a number of other problems to occur such as a loss of balance, loss of rotation, too much ball speed, and wrist pain. (4)
7. Completely relaxing my armswing from start to finish. The few times I've kept my arm really relaxed actually eliminated or greatly reduced many of my other problems. (5)
8. Yes, about once per month, and it is usually helpful. (4)
9. Learn to keep my armswing relaxed on a consistent basis without having to concentrate on it. I don't know if I will fully achieve this in the next season but do believe I will improve upon it. (4)
10. In general I can zone out most distractions. (4)

Isn't Armenia in Europe? I thought it was a former Soviet state.
1. Under-18 2. Male 3. Asian 4. N/A 5. Canada
6. My biggest problem, I guess, would be my reluctance to leave my comfort zone, even though I know there're bad habits involved. (4)
7. Strengthening my wrist, and my upper leg. Better overall physical conditioning would help immensely. (3)
8. I do consult with coaches both in youth league and on my own time. But they all point out the same things, so first I still have to break those bad habits. (3)
9. Again, break those bad habits!!! And, develop a freer armswing, and better timing and wrist position. I also need to practice my spares, since I just changed from throwing spinner to throwing end-over-end for them. But, I think they're achievable. I think improving average would just be a byproduct of those. (4)
10. I am horrible at remaining concentrated. I put too much pressure on myself, and every shot has the potential to be a choker. Mentally, I am just a mess. (0)

6) What is your most problematic/most hurting/ problem in your game?
I need to continue working on a consistent, smooth arm swing. (3)
7) What single change in your game can have the greatest impact on your score, if you could apply it?
Hitting my mark. I can generally identify lane changes and what I need to change, but executing that consistently. (3)
8) Do you consult with the coach about your game?
No. No coach for almost 24 years now. Dang it... I would LOVE to find a coach I can trust in Colorado, but I have had only had 2 coaches in my life. My dad when I was under 18 years old, and a coach for a college bowling class I took for one year back when I was 20. No coaches since then.
9) Average 211+ in both leagues this coming year. This would be a five pin improvement on my average from 2008-09. My first goal is a combination form goal... consistent smooth swing and staying down throughout my release with a good knee bend.
Second goal is 85%+ seven pin conversion rate. (I am a lefty)
How you feel about that goal? (4-5 minus). Well, if I was SURE I was going to hit these goals, it would not be much of a goal. I do feel like I am capable of achieving these goals. In my limited practicing this summer, I am finding some progress on my swing and the 7 pin. My scores have not been tremendous, in fact a bit below my average... but I feel and see progress.
10) Do you have problems concentrating during the game? (4) My concentration and mental preparation is getting much better. I think this has been my biggest improvement in the past 3 years, mental preparation. But I still have some lapses, and will continue working on this part of my game for next season.
Good luck to ya. If you would like any followup to these answers, please let me know.
Vic.

Consistency. Especially in my release. I'd rate it a 2.

Having the ability to rev it up and play a deep inside line, swinging the entire lane.

Only once (thanks CoachJim) and it helped immensely. 5

Only goal: Every first ball of every frame in the 1-3 pocket. Make every make-able spare and 20% of my wash-outs and splits. 0
What I would like to do: Carry 220 average for an entire season 4 Roll another 300 game 4 Roll first 800 series 4

10) Do you have problems concentrating during the game? (0 – everything distracts me while I bowl, 5 – nothing can break my concentration, I do not care whats going around – I totally concentrated on the bowling)
During the game nothing distracts me unless it's something from outside the center (personal problems) that I can't shake. As far as bowling, I feel I am top notch when it comes to not allowing myself to be distracted by events that happen during bowling.
In fact I'm shocked at others (in competitive leagues) who, for instance, will stand and wait to bowl after someone on another lane just had a split. If you're worried about what's happening on another lane, you're not concentrating hard enough. I almost never get frustrated by leaving 10-pins, splits, wash-outs, anything. People who are slow to get up to bowl when it's their turn are probably the only thing that distracts me.
1) 18-25 2) Male 3) Caucasian/white 4) N/A 5) US 6) Lane play (3.5) 7) Less muscling (4) 8) Sporadically (3) I use friends more than coaches. 9) I only have one that is measurable. Getting an 800 in the fall league. My other main goal is to do better in college, but I don't have any way of saying "Yeah, I've hit it." An 800 has a lot of variance to it, so (2.5) 10) Depends on the situation. When I'm serious, (4)

1. 25-35 2. Male 3. White 4. Under 40K 5. NY, USA 6. Consistency, about a 4. My first shot is somewhat insconsistant as to where I put it, its speed and location. 7. Change to a conventional bowling style, I 2 finger with a thumbtip. 2, it would certainly improve it, but I think I do better my way. 8. No, there are very few coaches who would work with a 2 finger bowler without attempting to totally change my style. I think coaching is great, probably a 4, but it is rare to find someone to work with my style. It allows someone to independently see what is going wrong. 9. I always set a goal. I think it is possible, but a lot of factors have to come into play, but all my goals are reachable, so I would say 2 (700 series, clean 30 frames, higher average are my goals) 10. I have some problems, most of which I can deal with, but a lot of things bother me, but most don't really affect me. I would say 2.
