Well, the other day, our best bowler decides that he wants to quit because he can't afford 15$ a week. Whatever the case may be. Me and the other two bowlers on the team think that it may be a good idea to cut our loses at this point because without him and without a backup bowler at the moment we're basically playing for last place.

So my question is should we leave the league or is that considered very rude and disrespectful to the other teams. We hope to join another league in the house in a few months and want to know how we may be viewed by others.

If its a USBC sanctioned league you need to give two weeks paid notice. If you do not they can have you suspended. So whatever you do, make sure you give notice if you decide to leave.

It won't matter how you are viewed by others if you are susupended and your card pulled. But there are leagues that will not let you start if they think you might bail on them during the season, with or without notice.

Unless it's a scratch league, you could still be competitive a bowler short. You might not win the league but you can still have fun trying.

As for how the other teams might view it if you do quit, that's hard to say. Some might have a problem with it, some might like that you are leaving, many probably won't care.

Like Erin said if it's a sanctioned league make sure to give your two weeks paid notice. I've never seen a league try to have someone's card pulled for quitting without doing so mainly because most of them don't even know they can, but there are some that do know and will try.

First point true enough... need to give two weeks notice no matter. Not only is it the USBC sanctioned rule, it is simple good manners. My opinion, what I would tell anyone if they asked me, if you can make it work... you should complete the league. Always tell my kids, finish what you start.

St. David, could you try and find one player to replace him for the remaining weeks? As mentioned, if it is not a scratch league you should still get the applicable handicap.

A bit different scenario but two years ago, due to injuries in a 4 person team mixed league, my wife and I were down to TWO bowlers midway through our winter league. We were in fifth place at the time in our twelve team league. Bowled two weeks with just the two of us and the blind. Finally found a couple of replacements who established averages with about 14 weeks to go, and managed to finish in first place for the league.

So, depending on circumstances, losing a bowler does not doom a team to last place.

Well, either way, good luck... hope it works out for the best.

We have one league that has all the forms ready, just fill in the blanks with your names for quitting the league. They don't care if its one week or 4. They've had people's cards pulled for not paying $15 (one week). Every season they pull at least one card or two. Its a pretty big league so they do have a lot of bowlers to consider. But they will definately have your card pulled even if you owe one week.

So I would not test it out. If you decide to quite and it is a sanctioned league you need to give two weeks paid notice. To the President of the league, usually in writting. I know you might be thinking "but this is only a bowling league", but that's the way it is. Once you fall into the suspended bowlers list you will not be able to bowl anywhere in a sanctioned league or tournament. Plus any cleaning up you try to do, now has to be done through central office, not the league, not the local associaiton. Plus USBC might decide to take your remittance and not lift the suspension for a while as means of punishment. So you really don't want to get into this cycle.

Couple of years ago, I joined a team in week 2 of league. They were 1 man short. The very next week, 2 bowlers had to quit. ! due to injury, and the other because of work transfer. Replaced both within 2 weeks, when the other original bowler got hurt at work and had to be replaced. Then a 4th broke his ankle while on vacation over the Holidays.

We had a total of 8 regular bowlers on that team and still won the league.

If you guy's are doing good enough to cash you might want a consider covering his dues for the remainder of the season. When the seasons over have him pay you back out his winnings. This worked for us a few years back, the end justified the means!

Thanks to everyone. I think we've decided not to chance losing anything for the future so we're gonna finish the last nine weeks of the league. Though I still have a few questions...

Can we still use his "average -10 pins plus handicap" even though he isn't in the league anymore. And as stated, I would assume we would all have to pick up his portion of the cost?

oh that's another thing. If you quit without notice, you forfeit any prize money. If you quit with notice, you should get a pro rated amount of prize fund back. However, many leagues simply say if you quit, you forfeit any monies.

Depends on your league rules, whether they are sanctioned, but generally no. But you could use the standard blind average designated by your league less 10 pins...

I don't think you should have to pick up a portion of the cost either... again, depends on the rules... but generally it just cuts down your prize fund a bit.
Good luck to ya.
