Just a side note... an historical point...? You made it seem like the H in historical was silent.
I believe that's the original parlance. With our mutt language, they're both correct now.
The point might be to differentiate "an historical" from "ahistorical" in spoken conversation.
Edit: I looked it up, and it has to do with the position of the accent in multisyllabic words. Words starting in 'h' where the accent is on later syllables used to be treated differently than hard 'h' words, where the accent is on the first syllable.
Hope this clears things up for you.

Since Osku has one now (he was #1 in points on the EBT Tour as mentioned earlier in this thread), I expect there to be the next rivalry on the PBA Tour between Jason Belmonte vs. Osku Palermaa, both nu skool and 2-handed fans will really dig that one.
Besides, isn't it about time to stick a fork in (for marketing purposes) the WRW/PDW Rivalry (Walter Ray Williams vs. Pete Weber) after all these years? I may be an old-school-type player (piping it down 7 right to the 1-3) and huge fan of both, but I truly believe that the PBA does need to showcase more of the Young Guns more (Osku, Belmo, Jones, Malott, Fagan, O'Neill, Rash, etc.) for the sake of the Tour's future.

The problem is, a lot of the young guns have been getting hot for a year or 2, then fizzling. PDW and Walter Ray are still good. Rash looked like he had that potential - nothing this year though. Fagan is exciting to watch, but struggles to win. Jones was absent from the winner's circle this year.
Maybe Malott v. Barnes? I don't know. I'd like to see Rash figure himself out next year.

Yeah, I found it strange that Rash won in his first 4 TV appearances, but then went 0 for 3. I've heard that he's had some spare troubles, though. At least he's still safely on the exempt points list, and still has 1 year from that exemption.
Rhino Page was also expected to accomplish a lot, but actually did worse than last season, and if it wasn't for that 300 game at the Japan Cup he wouldn't have surpassed last year's earnings. I think Jones also came in with high expectations but came up empty.
And, a few others like Billy Oatman and Ken Simard who seemed poised to win titles both lost their exemptions.
Personally, I had high hopes for Andrew Cain when he made the show in his first ever PBA event, then finished 6th. But he had a terrible 2008-2009 season. Hopefully, he'll recollect himself on the regional tour, and come back with an exemption.
I think Malott and Barnes are both going to last a while. However, they, and Page, seem to have a hard time winning on TV. I'm really hoping for Jason Couch to bounce back, too. Last but not least, win #46, WRW!
Anyway, BIGHMW is right, the PBA should be promoting, and establishing rivalries among, its younger players. WRW and Weber aren't going to be around for much longer, and I think some new faces in whatever little media coverage the PBA gets will do a lot of good. As much as I like watching Monacelli, and wish him well next season, I think, as a PBA member for 20+ years, he should be working for the exemption, and letting the international spot go to someone with less experience.

Agree with several posters on establishing the new. Barnes is not exactly new, but Him vs. Malott is OK.. but having both of them stave off Belmonte in the next few years will make for more compelling drama. That is if Belmonte is up to make a consistent challenge here in the U.S.

I think the reason the rivalries have not panned out with the newer age is that they really do not show a ton of emotions on the show. I think P.A. is a great character for the PBA, has a good time and really gets into it while he is bowling. I could see him as the next PDW. Malott is starting to become a little more vocal, I think Barnes is just too quite to be a "rival", haha.
Think Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace, both vocal. Mark Martin had been great for a long time, but he is not placed in that "rivalry" area because he is quiet and relatively friendly. I believe Chris Barnes is the same way.

Another reason that there aren't rivalries in bowling is because you need to get the same 2 guys on the show multiple times when they bowl head to head. On top of that, these guys travel all over the place with each other. It is easier having a rivalry against someone you don't like.

Tennis never had such TV ratings as when Jimmy Conners and John McEnroe faced off against each other.
And, Golf is going through it with Woods and Mickelson. To a lesser extent.

Also notice, most sports rivalries in "individualistic" sports are made so by the fans more so than the competitors.
Racing is a good example, Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon actually got along great, the fans made it a "rivalry" and it continued into the Junior Era.
I would imagine golf is the same, I have no idea but I doubt Mickelson and Tiger actually dislike each other.
Same with Tennis, Nadal and Federar (sp?) compete against each other so often in high profile tournies that they become a rivalry but I doubt they actually feel the same way as the fans.

Of course, that also applies to WRW and Weber. Apparently, they actually get along well together, it's just that they're the two biggest names in the sport which makes their rivalry, probably.
