My wife currently bowls a Hammer Emmerald Vibe. It is drilled to go long as her ball speed is very low, 9-11 mph, and her revs are in the medium range.

Occasionally she is frustrated with certain lane conditions which render her stroker style a bit "undergunned," and she finds her ball hooking brooklyn quite a bit, or using up its energy before getting to the pocket.

My question is for all of you that know, or are stroker style bowlers what would you recommend for this style of bowling as she is looking to add another ball to her arsenal for those times where she truly needs the ball to hold the line, retain its energy and not roll out too early. Remember, slooooow speeds!
thanks
Evil

Hey evil, it sounds like I have a similar style as your wife. I'm a small guy and I only bowl maybe a little faster than your wife at around 12-13mph with maybe 200-300rpm. On dry conditions I don't stand a chance, hopefully fixing that with an avalanche slide I just ordered. However on oiled lanes I use a Playmaker and swing out. On sport patterns I throw my Hammer Anger pretty much straight with a little bit of backend depending on the pattern. If your wife prefers more of a straight shot and the vibe is too aggressive I'd probably recommend a dry lane ball, something with tons of length. To name some: 900 Global Link, Avalanche Slide, Rotogrip Neptune, and Tropic Storm. Don't quote me though, I'm just saying this from experience.

Whoa, these are two radically different things. Probably not the ball but how it is rolled.

evil, 9-11 mph is incredibly slow. My guess is that her ball speed could be picked up rather easily. Some things, starting from the foul line and working back:

1) Clean release imparts more energy - the ball should fall into the lane, and it shouldn't be lifted onto the lane
2) Hand behind the ball imparts more energy into the ball - if she's on the side near the ankle, she can't accelerate through the release.
3) Free swing + higher starting position for the ball will give more speed. How high is her backswing? She should be able to get around shoulder high. If not, she could be staying too upright in the approach.
4) Walk faster. Norm Duke runs on the approach.
5) Add a step or steps to the approach. Norm Duke takes a lot steps (and runs, see #4).

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if Norm Duke can get 18mph, anyone (that can move quickly on the approach) can at least get to 15 or so.

Most women hold back when bowling. They control the ball from the moment they drop it into the swing to the point where they "gently" lay it down. First thing most women have to learn is to go ahead and throw the ball. Let it swing at her side and get her to swing it, I'm sure she can swing it with more enthusiasm then she is when she actually bowls. Many women have no backswing and no followthrough. Gaining both will help tremendously if this is the case.

For all those with slower ball speed. It is imperative to keep the ball polished by the Pro Shop with a ball spinner about every 3 - 4 weeks. If she has not had her Vibe polished in a month or so, its due.

I agree here, I think most women in the sport are just trying to be to nice to the ball. Remember, slowing the ball down still counts as muscling the swing, just the same as the power players you see speed it up by muscling.
