I understand that there is a formula to calculate the stride distance according to the height of the individual bowler. I wish to adopt the 5 step approach. Is there a standard or recommended method to calculate each stride?

With your heels about 6 inches in front of the foul line, facing away from the pins...take 5 steps starting with your left foot (if your are right-handed)..look down on the approach at your heels, turn around and try starting from there.
