Hello everyone!!!!

Thanks so much for your feedback. I looked at some videos on "you-tube" about the approach and learned a lot. I went and had a lesson today and used what I saw in the video and did pretty ok. The instructor gave me a few more pointers and said that my approach looked good for a novice, but that I needed to slow it down.

After a while I did even better :-).

They suggested a "Power Groove" reactive (?) ball for me. They also said I should use a 12 pound ball. Since I don't have a ball yet, I used a house ball and the only one that fit my hand span was their 10 pound ball, and that was still a bit big for my hand.

Is the power groove a good ball for beginners? From what I have read on here, the ball should be at least 13 pounds to really knock the pins down?

I have heard when a ball is drilled to fit your hand it actually feels lighter because of the proper fit...is this true?

I'm really liking this sport!!!!!!!!!!!!

You say your arm isnt strong enough to throw hard with higher weights, but what you will learn is that you dont throw the ball at all, you pick it up, let it swing down free, dont muscle at all, the height you drop it forward at will give it its own speed, I think I could probably toss a 25lb ball if it fit properly and i didnt muscle it using that technique.

The power groove is a decent entry level ball, you might be able to use a heavier ball, one rule of thumb is weight/10, so for a 140lb person 14lb ball, and yes a properly fitted ball feels MUCH lighter. I used to use a 14lb ball and with a proper fit 16lbs feels lighter than the 14lbs i used to use at the house balls.

a jump from 8 to 13 would be a lot. I notice a lot less deflection even moving up to a 11 or 12 from 10 when my wife bowls, but a lot of it is also speed you are obtaining.

I realized that today. I was so used to balls not fitting my hand correctly that I had to squeeze my fingers just to hold onto the ball. I have long slender fingers and not a big span so I was using an 8 pound ball because it fit somewhat.

NOW I am ready to get a ball and have it drilled to fit my hand. I am looking at the Power Groove, but not sure of the weight...at least 12 I know, but should it be higher?

Yes Janet, a properly fitted ball, and a free arm swing can handle the heavier weight. And, a Power Groove is a beginner ball.

Last, please clear out your PM's. You are at the maximum.

You could look at something like a Tropical Storm or Hammer Vibe and ask your Pro Shop what weight they have a real core instead of generic core.

The Hammer Vibe hits pretty hard for me, and you might be able to handle a 13 or 14 lb, but really it is hard to say until you have tried it.
