John,
You are correct that your follow through should indeed be straight. If you watch that slow motion video of Sean Rash on youtube you will see that his elbow actually comes directly in front of his face, while his hand still moves towards his target. This motion is what you are eventually going to create with the back up ball drill. The hand position looked much better in this video. I believe doing this a few more times will keep that hand and elbow in nice and tight to the body.

Friday's "back-up" ball game:

Friday's regular game after "back-up ball game:

And now for my next dump question: Should I set up the ball & throw my regular ball just like the "back-up" throws until the release?

John, you intrigued me to the point that I practiced a back-up today. The lanes were so dry that I couldn't use most of my equipment, so it was a perfect time to do it. I kept my arm tight, and tried to lead with the ring finger, and thumb pointing to 3.

The best I could do was a 4 board hook, instead of backup. Guess, I'll keep trying, though.

I have marveled at some bowlers rolling a back-up at right side spares, but never tried it before today.

Said to myself, "self, if John can learn, so can I".

LOL. The funniest thing is that no matter what I do (House balls, my spare ball only, regular strike ball; old one/new ones, PBA patterns, and now a "back-up" ball) I bowl + or - 180's. I need to throw with my left hand and see how I do. I bet I could “hike” it between my legs and get 180!
Say a pray next weekend for Ron Clifton!

You need to focus on starting the ball the same every time. If you look at the vids, one push away goes straight, the next one is out to the right, that is why the ball is spraying all over the place.

Where Ron is really going to help is for why the ball is falling off your hand at the release. This is something I hope he will be able to fix when he's there. Let me know what he says is causing this.
