So, Monday nights I bowl in a fun league at the university's bowling center. This was our last night of our 12 week league, but probably the most interesting.

About halfway through my team's 2nd game, the girl working the counter goes to investigate a ball return problem for a guy on another team. She comes back with a huge shard of bowling ball, but no ball. Eventually, the ball return spits out the ball. The pictures are of what was left.

I have no idea if they offered to replace it or not - I don't even think the guy really cared since it was just a house ball he had acquired from somewhere.

I'm speechless. I think I would've been dumbfounded.

I had that happen to me once a few years ago. But I may have slammed the ball to the concrete floor of my basement.

holy cow. I don't think I have ever seen a chunk that big out of a ball unless it met the concrete in a "planned" experiment. Apparently the ball return got hungry,

That happened to 2 Columbia balls I had. Boy, that cover stock looks really thin.

Upon a closer look, I hate to tell you but, there is still a piece missing.

Yeah, that's why I'm happy I won't be bowling there anymore - nearly all the returns there like to eat small chunks of my coverstock (not the normal nicks and scratches from wear and tear) and do so nearly every time I'm there. I had a ball drilled up in Feb and just recently started taking lessons from the guy who drilled it at another center - he was surprised it was the same ball because it already had so much surface damage. Thankfully the damage is away from the track.

And Dennis- I noticed that, too. I'm sure the other chunk(s) are back in the pit still (at least until the maintenance crew gets in today), but like I said, I don't the owner cared too much.

We had someone take a chunk out of a ball like that about two months ago in one of my leagues. He left a 7-10 and threw the ball 28mph to try to get the 10 to kick out and the ball went into the gutter and hopped out up and over the 10, hit the table and sheared the ball about a 1/3 of the way through. It was definitely strange to see thats for sure.

Some Crazy Glue and duct tape should fix it up as good as new.
