One coach once showed me a technique to use to avoid this sort of balance issue and release issue with timing in mind.

Try walking up to the line and just practice taking two step. One step with right foot, then slide. Add your release to this. Keep trying it a bit to get the feel. Then go back and add the additional two or three steps to this. But get the feel of the release with the slide. Also get that opposite arm out during this to balance yourself.

oh and add some knee bend and a little bending with the knees. you can keep your back straight for the most part.

Well, apparently Tommy likes to have his thumb twisted. It's his own personal preference. As for putting fingers in last, it doesn't matter at all. The most important finger you put in the ball is the thumb (well, not really a finger) and putting it in first really helps you get a better fit on it. Usually people say to put your fingers in first because when your thumb is in it's somewhat difficult to put your fingers in correctly, but Tommy kinda wiggles his fingers in so they fit properly.

The way TJ puts his fingers in the ball keeps his grip pressure very light, which keeps him from being able to grab the ball at the bottom.
