Ok, my tuesday league has a 50/50 raffle every week where one bowler gets the weekly cost back ($29). There are 55 bowlers in our league currently, and one bowler has won the raffle 6 or 7 times so far. Coincidence? Does it surprise you that this bowler is on the secretary's team who organizes it? I hate to call it a conspiracy, I really do, but its a 27 billion to one shot that one person wins it 6 times. That's some $296 this person has gotten, which pays for 30% of their league fee.

Would you think that this person should withdraw their name from the raffle for the rest of the year? Would you call them out on it? Any suggestions? It is really irritating for everyone in the league to see this person win so much, but what do you do?

One question that springs to mingd is how many tickets is a person allowed to buy? This could alter the odds quite a bit, though they would still be quite high. On a league several years ago a teammate and I would go 50/50 on buying the 50/50 tickets for ourselves and we won it 6 times, I can not remember if we were splitting the cost of one ticket or buying two.

That is exactly why I don't get into 50/50. It has nothing to do with skill, but all chance. 1 person could win 6 times, but more than likely, many will not win at all.

I was on the secretary's team when I bowled, and we had to sell 50/50 every week. There were several people who would buy $20 or more worth of tickets, and it seemed like one of them would win every week. I would always get a kick out of it when a little old lady would put one dollar in and walk away with the money.

My team sold 50/50 for 5 years and we only won once or twice it is pure chance, my wife bowled with me one season in a different league and won 5 times, but she is lucky like that.

The odds? 50/50. A thing will either happen or it won't. :-)

My league has a 50/50. I never get in. There are alway people who buy a lot of tickets and never win. I waste enough money on pots as it is.

Lol, I get yelled at for this a lot at work we have one every payday for a fund in case one of our co-workers has major illness or something like that, if nobody does we have a catered dinner at the end of the year and draw door prizes.

Any way I have won several times I buy a ticket at the beginning of sales middle and end so I have a better chance of winning and like others have said increase my odds by buying more. I won 6 paydays in a row once and seemed like I had no friends until I sprung for a couple pizzas with my winnings! lol

It's actually part of our bowling cost. Everyone gets 1 entry, no one can buy more entries, so it is supposed to be pretty much even.

I don't think the person should have to withdraw their name from the drawing because everyone has the same chance of winning. I doubt its more than anything other than coincidence but I could be wrong. I never enter the 50/50 because its all chance. We do a blind draw doubles every week where you add yours and one other bowlers (blind draw teammates) second game scores (plus handicap) together and highest 5 scores get payouts. Its got a lot more to do with how good you bowl, although it does take some chance in getting a good teammate that week.

Matt, I feel your pain. A Saturday league I was in a few years ago ran 50/50 and a strike ball that was similar to the 50/50. The league president's wife, who also was on his team sold them. She kept track of everyone that bought it because at the end of the season anyone that bought 50/50 tickets on a regular basis got a portion of the half that wasn't given away each night. If you didn't buy tickets on a regular basis you didn't get anything back from it at the end. You also didn't pick the tickets but she grabbed them off the stack and handed them to you.

It wasn't really the 50/50 that was the issue though. It was the strike ball. You had to buy in for every week of that current round. Each week a ticket was drawn and who ever had it had one chance at throwing a strike, the next frame after it was called and they could win the pot. It rolled over until someone hit, sometimes adding up for weeks and well over $400 on some occasions. Well when got that high someone from her team or some one that was part of her clique would end up having their ticket drawn. They still had to strike to win the money but it was just fishy that it was certain people that would end up with the chance.
