I've never been to a tournament before, so when I heard my bowling center was hosting the U.S. Open, I decided to give it a shot. I saw some mention of Pro-Ams, but not really being familiar with how these things work, I thought you had to be really good to participate. After watching the Pro-Am action yesterday (with the non-exempt pros) and seeing that you don't have to be an excellent bowler to participate, I signed up to bowl today with some exempt pros. I had an amazing draw, and got to bowl with Walter Ray Williams, Jr. and Parker Bohn III. Parker bowled a couple of trick shots, including a two-ball-in-one-hand attempt at picking up a 4-6 spare that I left and invited him to shoot at (since I had just been asking him about some of his trick shots). He made the 4 and barely missed the 6. I told him it was okay, I usually miss that one, too. Then for his last ball in the 10th frame, he bowled two with his left and one with his right, getting all three balls to the pins at the same time for a strike. I decided to retire my Homer Simpson Vis-a-ball that I barely use anymore, and used it to get autographs from all six of the pros I bowled with. It was a lot of fun and I'd recommend doing it if you ever get the chance. (I didn't bowl very well myself, but with the no-tap scoring, I did manage to at least beat my average every game.)
