Is there any rule about dropping the ball before the foul line? Just curtious because there's a guy in our league who drops the ball about a foot before the line most times...Doesn't really matter much - he's a 140 ave guy but wonder if it's legal or not.

No rule, he's legal.

Oh, should be clarified. Which direction is he rolling?

no.. it just looks and sounds weird- the ball really slams down almost as if the holes are too big and it drops with a bang too early....
Very nice guy though- he's supposed to be getting a new ball so will be interesting to see if this changes up.

I have a teammate who routinely drops the ball behind his sliding foot. I don't know how he controls his targeting? but, he does.

No foul, other than the fact that all the side rotation you get on the ball will be taken out because of the lack of oil on the approach haha.

USBC says no foul.

However, due to the danger it puts the other bowlers in, with oil transfer to the approach, I believe it should be.

Go down after any Senior league and you will see copious black marks from their old rubber balls marring the last 6 inches or so of the approach. Someone that needs to slide and hits a patch of that will stick and possibly fall.

Thats a good point, I never really thought about the oil transfer thing. I agree after thinking about it though, also from a business standpoint because the lanes are oiled to protect them (not to mention the heads are harder material usually) so the ball landing on the approach could cause damage to the lanes themselves.

Could? You should see some of the dented boards on the approach by a guy on my church league that does the same thing. I keep telling him this isn't basketball. The ball literally bounces about 6" off the lane at the foul line. Naturally, his line is all over, and the hook is cut way down.
