Looking at the definition of resin on Wikipedia, it is a hydrocarbon. It makes sense to me that if one exposes the resin on a bowling ball to high heat, it will turn liquid and flow from the ball. So I don't think this problem is specific to Ebonite, use of an oven at a high enough heat is a problem for any manufacturer's ball that uses resin. It seems to me that the safest approach is hot water and a mild degreasing agent.

Here's a link to Morich that talks about removing oil from a ball: http://www.morichbowling.com/Products/Cleaning.htm

I use the hot water method with some Simple Green which seems to be effective and safe (and cheap).

Reactive resin balls aren't resin. They're polyurethane with additives to create a porous/grippy surface.

Talking with Bill Monce about hot water cleaning on Saturday. He said that the one thing that he worries about when heating up equipment is the cool down phase. He said that if you the ball cools too quickly, it could crack. He recommends you let the water cool off to at least luke warm temp before taking the ball out. The oil will still be sitting on the surface of the water.
