My team has always done pretty decent standings wise but this year we are facing a pretty brutal streak. One of our bowlers has been on a downward spiral that has seen their average go down 7 pins to 146 over the last two months. Couple that with the fact were fighting to get above .500 when we hit 3 teams in a row that were extremely hot and it has gotten to the point where the team is really giving up. Despite all my rah-rahs and positive comments last week there was a lot of “we are not going to win” talk. Also I have tried to get some friendly competitiveness between my three teammates going because they are all so close in average (145, 146, & 147) but it doesn’t seem to be working. The losing streak now stands at 12 and we are sixteen games under .500 at 32-48. To make matters worse this week we face a team that really crushed us in winning all 4 last time we faced them.

If anyone has any other ideas or some advice on what I can do or say to help the team not give totally up on this season. I know our team and bowling in this league is about fun more than anything else but I certainly do not want to get to a point where they just mail it in for the next 11 weeks.

I think the issue is not having fun. If everyone is worried about winning and losing and feeling defeated then it doesn't sound like much fun to me. Just try to get everyone to bowl to be bowling and not worrying about the outcome. This is really a lot like one person worrying about his/her performance. I've been on those types of teams with no shot of doing well in the standings. We just tried to have fun, even if we were making terrible shots.

I think I may have underestimated my teams desire to win or be competitive. Maybe I just always thought it was all about fun because we had never been in this situation before. I see a lot of pressing going on and am trying my best to get them to relax. I have really never seen my 2 long-time teammates (2 1/2 years together as a team) as tense as they were last week.

Do you do anything other than just bowl? On one team I bowl on, we play poker, which adds a little fun and good natured competition within the team. There's also a game we play with spares. Everyone starts with $1 in front of them at the beginning of a game (or series if you wish). If you miss a spare, you pass your dollar to the next person. If you make a spare, you keep any dollars in front of you. If you bowl fairly clean, you'll end up with some extra cash. It might give some extra incentive to make spares.

Another team I bowl on, we don't do anything extra. Everyone watches the scoreboard and if anyone starts to get frustrated, it seems like the whole team falls apart. If we're winning, times are good, but if we aren't, it can be a long night. I enjoy the first team I mentioned a lot more.

There's a lot of things you can do to take your mind off the team score, but still focus on bowling. Beer frames, some sort of running pot, etc. Find something that's fun for everyone and stick with it.

One way to have a bit of fun and add incentive to do well might be using a kitty. If you make a baby split everyone else kicks in 10c, if you miss it you kick in the dime. A hard split is worth a quarter. If you miss the head pin you put in a buck. If you turkey the others kick in a quarter. If you have a P game (no opens) it costs the others a quarter. For every open frame you drop another dime If you don't make your average you kick in a buck. At the end of the season you take all the money and go out to dinner with your significant others. The better you bowl the less you put in and the better the chance of a free meal. Lots of variations on this but I find it better than pot games because it's between the team members and the idea isn't really to make a lot of money by getting lucky once..

A team that I used to bowl against would do something similar to that. They actually had a sheet of like 10-15 things that they would do. From missing spares, getting splits, to if the team has 11 strikes during the game and you miss the 12th, you put in money (or take it out if you strike). They also all got into all of the side pots and put the winnings in the kitty. At the end of the year, they split the cash and went to Nationals the following week on it. 4 man team they normally got about $1200 a piece they said. The reason for them having so much is because of the pots.

With Avery on bringing a deck of cards and playing poker--one card for spare, 2 for strike, start with none or start with some based on each player's handicap. If you only have one deck, max the hand out at 5 cards and require discard before picking up any new ones. Throw as much money as you want on the hand.

Get several decks, you can get other teams involved. Whole Saturday league gets involved--all nudie cards, too, so well, there's just a smidge more incentive.

Small bit of distraction, and those that are getting a good hand try a little harder. I'm sure other teams on your league are doing something similar so you can model yours off theirs or just join up.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hopefully if we can get some side games going it will help.
