Evidently, the Pros don't like the idea of this tourney too much. So far, Wes, Norm, Rhino, and Kent are not bowling this week. Probably more to follow.

Norm Duke always takes a few weeks off from the tour so that is probably all this is. Man I really wanted to see Duke and Malott bowl this week because I figured both would have a decent chance, albeit for different reasons.

I figured Duke would bow out just for some rest and this would be a good time for him. I could see Rhino and Wes not wanting to bowl it since they are products of the modern era, meaning the bulk if not all of their bowling careers been with reactive resin and at times aren't the most accurate when it comes to strike shots. I'm surprised to see Kent decline to bowl it, but then again he doesn't quite have the revs that will help when it comes to carry even though he would probably live in the pocket.

Could this mean more guys come out of the TQR that you can use any ball in? Imagine if one of those guys makes the show and upstages some of the exempt bowlers.

Well Norm is already exempt I believe and has won a few events I beleive so now would be an ideal time to rest in my eyes.

Cal,
That is an interesting notion, someone else from the qualifying round making the show. That would be interesting.

I have one question. What is the advantage of being "exempt"?

For the past 5 or 6 years, maybe more the PBA has used the Exempt system. Being exempt means a bowler is automatically in the top 64 of the regular tournaments and guaranteed to cash in those tournaments. There are usually only around 54 or so exempt spots at each stop with exception of the Majors and maybe one or two others. Before this format all stops were basically an open type tournament that only the top so many would cash. The Tournament Qualifying Round (TQR) is a seven game qualifying round to get into the actual tournament. So one advantage is less games bowled that week. Another is they make money every regular stop they bowl.

My top three: Tommy Jones, Sean Rash, and Robert Smith

All in the top five through 6 games in the round of 64.

Wow, Jason Belmonte just barely managed to squeak past the TQR round, and only because an amateur qualified within the top 8, handing Belmonte the last remaining spot.

Personally, I think the high rev players such as Robert Smith will do very well in this tournament. Smith, with his 600rpm, can probably still hook quite a bit. Even if not, if he can throw the ball 28-30mph at the headpin it'll still be very explosive.

Hey, I'd love to see Robert Smith win. But I'd be lary about picking him because of all the injury problems he's been having. If his back isn't killing him, I'd say he's got a good shot, if not I'd count him out.

That would be awesome to see some one throw it that fast.
