I have read elsewhere that if you bowl in USBC sanctioned tournaments where the final rolloff may be televised, the new agreement between the USBC and the PBA requires all equipment to be registered with the PBA. The reason is that the PBA has the rights to ALL television of these types of events, and bowlers have to adhere to the PBA rules for equipment. That means, only equipment Manufacturers who have paid Juice to the PBA can be used. This, the article says, applies to National as well as Local broadcasts, and includes Balls, Shoes, wrist supports, thumb slugs, finger grips and more.

A follow up discussion said ALL televised bowling. You could use your normal equipment in the tournament, but if you make a televised final, your equipment may be thrown out.

I knew this applied to the weekly PBA telecast, but didn't know it applied to local television too. Many local events are televised in Southern Wisc. on local TV.

Anyone have any info?

Here is the notice I saw.

TO: ALL POTENTIAL 2009 USBC MASTERS TOURNAMENT ENTRANTS...

Were you aware that the TV show at the USBC MASTERS is governed
by the new PBA? ...and, that if you make it to the "final round" you'll be
subject to PBA "Product Registration" rules - which may prohibit your use
of such things as popular bowling shoes, wrist supports, inserts, balls,
etc..? Interesting, how the USBC (which is adding in excess of $150,000
of our money, to the prize fund) can permit the PBA (an outside, "for profit"
entity) to actually call the shots as to what may be used to win the event.

I have to say I doubt this. How can the PBA control what local channel 4 shows, as long as local channel 4 doesn't use the PBA logo? They can't. You can't own bowling on TV. The reason this is true for the USBC Masters is because it is the PBA, not the USBC, that is televising it.

That's just wrong... It looks like you won't be able to use your Legends balls.

Hold on, it reads this on the top of the page:

"Any ball manufactured before 1982 and, who's manufacturer is currently Product Registered in the appropriate category, is legal regardless of whether the ball appears on the Approved Equipment listing."

I'm not sure how to take that.

According to that listing, the only thing I could use are my finger grips. lol
