Just a quick thought - last night I was bowling in my scratch league and I noticed alot of people not having fun. I mean really not having fun. Language, throwing towls & rosin bags, pacing up and down, kicking the ball return - I mean alot of hostility.

At the end of the day - it's supposed to be fun. I try to keep in mind that I am paying money to bowl, so I should enjoy it.

Plus I am a firm believer that the mental game is more important than the physical game.

Well, just my opinions.

Now everyone go and have fun smile

I have to confess that I have much more fun practising then I do bowling league. I work hard at this game. Its frustrating when I cannot get the pieces to come together or figure out the moves.

And you're right. The mental game is much harder to learn then the physical. I wish someone could teach or coach the mental game like they do the physical. I've been so a sport phsycologist and so far the "just do it", "live in the moment","let it go" is all fine and good. But how do you do it? So far no one's been able to explain exactly how you do it.

Want a tougher mental game? Learn how to LOSE. I've gotten my butt kicked for months on end when I first learned how to bowl. Once I got better, like anyone else I suffered splits when the game was on the line, missed easy spares, pocket shot splits, weak carry or teams that just shoot way over their averages. I spent my 20s being angry at bowling. I never made a scene mind you but the fire in my stomache when I didn't lock down a win for my team would not just ruin my night but my week. Bad games, bad series, bad shots resulted in lost sleep no joke.

With my time away from the sport recently I lost the anger and feel like a new bowler. People comment to me how they can't tell if I'm bowling a 150 or 250. Don't think for one second if I'm bowling a 150 I'm not frustrated inside but what good does lashing out do except distract you? I think it works against you if you celebrate too hard too. I don't care what my last outing or practice session was like it's the next one that matters. I've practiced enough to know what to do, if I make poor adjustments I have myself to blame. If I lay down good shots and lose out like I did tonight by missing a 700 due to a 10 pin in the 10th(697 series) then it wasn't meant to be. Next week I get to go for another 700+, this week is over.

I think your mental game can hurt you if it's weak. You have to tread a fine line of confidence without being arrogant. As far as how to do it? For me it's as simple as telling myself not to limit my expectations. I've practiced and bowled 1000s of games by now. Rely on what I have learned and my strengths, when things are going wrong have a short memory. The last thing you want to do is stay angry for the 2.5 hours you're at the lanes, shoot worse and have it shake your confidence. That's how slumps are born.

Take last night for example. I hate this house. Actually I like the league, people, etc....hate the conditions. Its really not an easy scoring house by any means. In 4 years, I've had my moments there but most have not been fun. Despite trying to go in with a good attitude, "just have fun" thinking, as the night and carry progresses its just not possible for me to keep it under control. In fact we left this house for that reason last fall. Went to another house, did fantastic, built up a lot of confidence, then went back to that house for the summer. And low and behold its all back again in just a few short weeks. Now you have to keep in mind that I am not the only one that struggles at this house. But I am the only woman the prior season (before we left) that booked over 200 in it. They have no scratch leagues except very low capped ones, due to lack of participation. This house is not well liked in the city because of the shot and lanes (they still have not passed USBC certification).

So last night again we slugged it out. I was throwing the ball terrible. I know I was. No matter what I did, I could not get into rhythm. My timing was bad, my balance gone, elbow flying out....basically a mess. Three games go by and there's only been a few balls I thought were worth the pin fall and I left 10 pins doing it. Very frustrating. You'd think you could figure out what the problem is. But I know I didn't execute well enough for any decent score. We bowled the blind team, so no direct competition. I practised well there on Thurs. Its just something about that house is in my head and I can't stand it. Now you could just chuck it up to being a bad night. But every night there is a bad night. I'd be OK if I could just get a cookie thrown my way there every once in a while.

Some people bowl well there. But very few. Mostly men with tons of hand (rev dominant) or older people with very little ball speed. Ladies state is there this summer. So far none of the big names have shot over 550 and they have the house shot out. We're going to go by today and watch Kim Terrell bowl (she's got slower ball speed then I do, more revs of course and heck lets face it a much better bowler). It'll be interesting to see how she deals with the lanes. Hopefully we got the squad time right.

Thanks for listening to my rant. laugh
