I kept hearing about the challenge of Sport bowling, and thought Hmm i might want to try throwing a few games on a sport shot, just to show me how much of a challenge i will have in a tournament not on my house shot.

So, I went to Bowl.com and looked up sport lanes in my area, Riverside, ca. None. There are none within 50 miles of me. Id have to drive. Maybe ill just do that one of these days.

Talk to centers in your area. While they may not have a sport shot league, they might have the ability to put out a sport shot for practice.

I saw advertisements for tournaments at Cal in Lakewood and Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley.

Currently I'm only aware of sport shot tournaments for juniors and one sport shot league in the San Fernando Valley. Outside my area, I'm sure there are others, just not that I'm aware of them.

We have two brunswick centers and an AMF within about 8 miles of where i live. Maybe ill call them and see, first, what oil pattern they are using in the first place for league play, and If it would be possible to get them to oil a lane sport shot so I can practice on it, or possibly form a sport shot league.

It might be something that your neighborhood houses could use as a draw too. PBA tournament shots for weekend tournaments, or sport shot handicap weekend tournaments. But the red tape you have to go through to have a Sport League and Sport Condition are often the reason why houses don't bother.

Get the head mechanic or the local association on board. If you can get mechanic to help you find the tough patterns and someone from the local association to help take the tapes, you're there.

If you decide not to do the actual sport league, you can always choose the pattern and not take the tapes every week. No one gets the trinket-awards, but it depends whether you're there for the shot or the patches.

I agree that you should be there for the shot and the competition and not the awards, but it would be bitter-sweet to shoot an award score and not be recognized that it was on a sport shot.

And PS - That crystal pin would look really good above my fireplace. smile

Kevin,

There's a 'Sport Shot' league that bowls at Del-Rio (562/927-3351), in Downy every Monday night, 8 p.m. This might be more of drive - depending how deep into Riverside you reside - than you're willing to make just to try out a sport shot pattern??

At any rate, if they lay out the shot on all lanes, and the league doesn't fill the house, you could find a lane / pair to test your skills... at worst, you could show up near the end of the last 'league' game and snag a pair of lanes after they've finished for the evening? (granted it won't be "fresh", but it's better than a kick in the pants.

i have the same problem in albuquerque, no one will participate in sport leagues, and therefor no center will hold one. also, no one will put down a sport shot for me to practice on due to the work to put it out. changing the machine's program, stripping, oiling, restripping and reoiling. i can understand. if you want the challenge of a sport shot, try throwing up fourth arrow on a house shot. i know it's not the same, but it teaches me how to repeat shots. only a good shot will make it to the pocket, and only if i'm lucky will it carry. kind of like a sport shot.

Let me offer this suggestion. Often proprietors are looking for ways to meet the needs of customers, but they don't see the appeal.

Ask the proprietor what night he has trouble filling. Perhaps Tuesdays at 8:30 is routinely slow. Round up a few bowlers and offer to practice regularly there on that night. If you can regularly get a following for the practice night, you have the beginnings of a sport league.

We've had an ad/jr sport shot league every summer for a few summers and we've even held Jr. Gold events on sport. I've always suggested there was a market if the proprietor would just leave the shot out instead of immediately taking it off when the tourney/leagues are finished. A few months ago, he finally took me up on it, leaving 4 lanes like that every Sunday morning and Thursday night. And there are MANY bowlers (not just league bowlers from that center) that have heard and are now coming in to bowl specifically on the sport shots we've laid out.
