First the gloating - my 17-year old daughter just made her high school bowling team. laugh

She's a junior and decided to try out this year and made it. After watching her during tryouts, the coach asked why she hadn't tried out before. Mainly, her interest wasn't there until recently. But anyway, she's on the team and very excited about it.

Now for the ball question. She has a Brunswick T-Zone (plastic) but now that she's on the team, she needs something better. I can't afford a lot but I really want to get her something with a reactive cover and, if possible, something with more than a pancake core. Here's what I've been looking at (in no particular order):

Brunswick Power Groove or Avalanche series
Hammer Cherry Vibe
Columbia Wrath Dead Flush
Storm Hot Rod or Street Rod

Not knowing all the lane conditions she'll be bowling on, I'm thinking the Storm balls might be the best as they are rated for medium oil conditions and she'll have her T-Zone for dry lanes.

Any thoughts? Other balls I should consider?

Oh, and the fun part will be she's going to go with a finger-tip grip - at her coach's suggestion. I told her that a while ago but being her dad, she won't listen to me. wink

+1 for the Avalanche Solid. You won't find a more versatile ball for the price.

Congrats to you and your daughter. Her Coach should be able to advise her on the lane conditions expected before you purchase a ball. The Coach may also lead you that direction also, as many schools receive discounts at certain proshops.

Congrats to you and yours! Good luck with the search, I'm a Roto Grip fan, but leaning towards Legends/Lane Masters as well.

Congrats to your Daughter and you. I agree with Dennis here. Ask the Coach what type of lanes/balls you should look at and go from there. Also he probably would recommend a Pro Shop as well.
I'm a Lanemaster guy. Good luck and good bowling

Thanks everyone. She's very excited about this - as am I. grin

The bummer is she won't be able to compete in the team's 1st competition. She's also in choir which has a concert the same night as the competition. Because choir is a graded class, she has to go to the concert. frown

I'm hoping to talk to the coach tomorrow night about the lanes and ball recommendations. Just wanted to get a head-start.

The house the team practices at has a Pro Shop so I'll probably get her ball there. The owner is supposed to be IBPSIA certified. And if I can get a discount, even better. thumbsup

30 Clean, I bowl on a team with 3 Coaches, and 2 of them Coach a local High School. The House where we bowl is the home house for one of the schools. The house gives reduced rates for practice and the Pro Shop has set aside a ball collection for the bowlers to choose from, based on the selection of the coach and Pro Shop mgr.

hmmmm, you just made me think of something. Nothing was mentioned about practice costs. I wonder if this is coming out of their athletic fee or is that another charge. Guess I have another question for the coach.

It would make it much easier if they have a ball collection to pick from. Knowing my daughter, she'll just opt for the coolest looking one.
