Normally I just need two balls for our league, the Freak-A-Zoid and a spare ball.
Something unusually happened last night, we are into the second game and I found that the lanes are drying out and my FAZ is over hooking, I am a power stroker and usually play the 5 board from the left (1st arrow). Since the ball is overhooking I decided to play more to the left and in the end I am like targetting between the 1st and 2nd board. If my release is out, down the gutter the ball goes...
Then I decided to use my spare ball to complete the remaining two games and the score is actually quite good.
Then is beside the point, what i would like to know is what will you suggest if you are in my shoes ? Taking into considersation that you have only two balls.

Are you familiar with the pattern that the house puts down for your league? In most house patterns the boards outside of five are often the driest part of the lane, the other move you could have made would be right to try and catch some of the higher concentration of oil. If you are not familiar with the pattern ask the lane technician.

Rhight handers have this problem all of the time. It's rare that I can use the same line all night line, same ball yes, but I'll almost always have to make an adjustment. Generally, the first move I make when the line starts to break down is to move left(I'm RH)to find some oil.

Moving right, IMHO, was the wrong move. Most oil machines, espically those that use pads or wicks (by their very nature), put the least amount oil on the 1 and 2 boards. So by moving your breakpoint out to the 1-2 boards, you moved to an even drier part of the lane, plus, you had to get you ball across the are you had already broken down.

Did you try to move your line to the right (inside) of the 1st arrow to find more oil? By moving right, maybe playing straight up 8-10 or even deeper and playing the breakpoint around 8-10, would have been a better move.

More then likely all you had to do is start scootching right/inside with your feet and target and that would have kept you in the oil.

Bimmerman is right, this is a right hander's world every time we step on the lanes, no matter which house it is. Find a line, lose a line, find a line lose a line....scootch, adjust, move keep up with the lane transition. Always gradually moving inside and/or further down the lane.

Hi all, I think you are right about the oil condition outside the first arrow. the question about moving inwards, how do I go about doing it ? How many board should I move initially ? do I still keep the same target point ? What about breakpoint, should I should use the same ? Thanks for the help.

I guess that depends on where your ball is hitting the pins. If your ball starts hitting the pocket a bit high, move a board with your feet and a board with your target. If your ball is starting to cross over to the other side, make a bigger move. you should always keep an eye on your breakpoint.

Welcome to the righthanders world. I started out tonight standing on 35 crossing the arrows at 15 and ended the night standing on 39 on the left lane and crossing the arrows at 18. Not only that but I had to tip toe down the ball return on the right lane. Now that's dry. And I was using a light oil ball.

When you want your ball to stop going high, you must move right being a left hander, unless, your planning to throw a different release, speed and etc...
Now, how much do you move, it depends on how far off you are. Treat each pin as three board movements with your feet. So, if your hitting just a tad high, try a board move to the right, but if on the nose, try a three board move. It also depends on what kind of player you are. Players that swing the ball can usually keep the same target and move the feet, but more direct players may have to bring the target with them. Some like moveing two boards with feet, one board with target. It sound like you are a down and in player, cause you like the 5 board. The objective when your hitting high and you can't stop it, and you only have one ball, is too, FIND SOME OIL, this will give you more length before the ball starts to break.
Finally, another option, which you may like, which doesn't involve moving. Is to change your targets from the arrows to the dots, which are just over the foul line. Setting the ball down shorter can give you some oil sometimes, since most players are throwing out over this area, or you can look past the arrows a foot or so and try to hit that target, this generally causes more speed. Mess around with some of this, hope it helps.

Thanks everyone for the help, will try it out during the next league as the bowling centre is not willing to oil the lane to the league condition for me to practice.

I recently broke down and bought a 3rd ball (adding to my other strike ball and my plastic spare ball). I got tired of competing against the other bowlers who had options when the lanes broke down. If you are good at changing your hand position during your release (I am not) then you may not need another ball.

Just because you are hitting the pocket doesn't mean you will carry a strike. Sometimes you have to change the angle of your ball into the pocket. That is a challenge when you are tring to adjust in the middle of a game. The trick then is to make sure you are covering your spares while you find a good strike line.

Smooth Stroker: I have always read that when the lanes start to transition you should move your target 1 board for every 2 boards you move with your feet. I haven't heard of the 1:1 ratio. I read alot of your posts and you sure sound like you know what you're talking about, so I hesitate to question your advice. What do you think?
