Is it illegal for a thumbless bowler to use a ball with a thumb hole and a weight hole, thus the ball would have 4 holes? This was brought up last night, a bowler was bowling thumbless with a ball with the four holes. Someone said that it was illegal, because in a four hole ball, three holes must be used. He obviously only used the finger holes. I thought it was a little ticky tack, and it was never pressed. Should it have been?

be used for gripping purposes.

As long as he can demonstrate it could be used, he's fine.

Hmm, for some reason I remember that you had to cover a thumbhole if you didnt use it. I don't know where I remember it from though.

You are right, Mattdean. The thumb hole must be covered or shown it can be covered, at presentation either by inserting your thumb or by your hand covering the hole if you don't insert your thumb. If your thumb hole is offset and cannot be covered by 1 hand as your fingers are inserted, it is illegal. Then, it is considered a second balance hole.

BTW, the posted explanation is not in the rule book, but in the Ball/Equip Spec Rules.
