I was bowling tonite and took a cigarette break. The thing i didn't remember to do before i started my next game was to put my bowling shoes back on.

When I stepped down to slide, the only thing that went forward was my body. Total spill. I have oil all over my shirt and jeans.

The worst part is that my sliding leg hurts like hell. I'm gonna take a long break for a couple of weeks at least. I'd love to go to a doctor to see what's wrong but i really don't have the money for it. MRI's aren't that cheap.

I know you guys aren't doctors, but I was just wondering if you have heard of any of your teammates or league bowlers ever do the same thing? I know the injury can be different for everyone. I'm just looking for comments on how long i should give it a rest.

i have done this due to the floor being super sticky. i didn't fall over but have stuck on the slide. i don't know about the injury side but the mental side it was terrible. it has really screwed up my approach. sometimes i don't think about it and have a good approach and release but sometimes i am apprehensive to go into my slide and it throws everything off.

All of CoachJim's recent woes have followed his sticking on the approach. But if what happened to him had happened to you, you wouldn't be walking.

I think every bowler has similar stories. I myself am particularly prone to sticky approaches even with my bowling shoes on. And since I don't have health insurance, I do not bowl if I feel the approaches are too dangerous for me. Its not worth it. I've seen too many people carted off in ambulances from sticking and falling on the approach.

Consequently, I am extremely careful when I do have my bowling shoes on. I am conscious of the weather, if people are tracking in water and/or snow. Conscious of beer and waitresses as well as little kids that are not careful about their beverages. I don't use the rest room if I can help it. I'm careful if I go into the cafe or bar. I don't have the shoe covers (might forget to take them off).

Hope you feel better soon and its nothing serious.

Erin

Whenever I am not on my lane, I put on my left shoe cover. Last night, I forgot to take it off until I got on the approach. It felt weird so I looked down and saw I left it on. I have seen people really bite it hard by leaving on the shoe cover. I will say one thing. It REALLY hurts too.

GP,
Just last night a teamate left his shoe cover on and went up to bowl. He actually went through wiith his release, stuck and almost fell. But he threw a beautifull ball and struck. He then suggested he should leave it on all the time. smile

I have left a shoe cover on through parts of my approach, but always noticed before I threw. Now, I slide my foot when I step onto the approach every time, as part of my pre-shot routine. If something is off with my slide sole, I notice before anything can happen.

Tim, I wouldn't recommend leaving his cover on. But, since the smoking ban here, it is very common that 1 or 2 bowlers a night has left his cover on or still had his regular shoes on. Because it is so common, other bowlers watch for it now.

I have seen quite a few strained knees, and even hips due to sticking on the approach. Myself included.

It's not fun.

I've taken a few spills and it's usually when drinking gets thrown into the equation. My buddy has taken a few spills from forgetting to take his cover off. Most of my spills have been from a wet slide sole. Quite painful indeed, but I've been fortunate enough to not hurt myself too bad. Though there was one last season when I stuck and hit the oil pretty hard and it really strained my shoulder. Fortunately it was just my balance arm though, and that shoulder has clicked for years so it's already messed up lol.

As far as your injury, idratherbebowling, what exactly hurts on your leg? If it's knee or hip I would give it at least 7-10 days and see what happens.

Well, it's sorta the whole leg. The muscles between my knee and hip throb for a small period but I also hurt when i pull up a stool in my kitchen to sit down. I have to make sure my butt is what i put all the weight on, instead of the back of my leg, when i sit. I also have some small throbbing in the front of my shin but not as bad as the top of the leg.

I feel i strained the muscles, and not the joints themselves. The knee or ankle doesn't hurt as much as in between the hip and knee or between the knee and ankle.

What a great idea. I will put that into my pre-shot routine from now on. I've seen a few bowlers do this at my house. I guess i didn't realize why until after i hurt myself. Thanks.
