Good bowling ball for me?

I am getting ready to get a new bowling ball here in aroud a month or so. Right now I have an Ebonite tornado and a spare ball. I don't get all that many revs on it. I would like more hook in the backend but still hook around 3/4 down the lane. I want something for more of heavy oil conditions. I would like to stay with Ebonite but if not, its no big deal. Any suggestions on what would be the right ball for me. I also have one more question. At the moment I am throwing a 12 pound ball. I would like for my next one to be a 14 pound. Will it be alright for me to get that and still use my 12 pound spare ball and 12 pound tornado for drier lanes. Thanks in advance.

If you go up in weight like that on your strike ball, you'll want to also go up on weight on your spare ball. As for a ball, maybe the Ebonite Clash or Hammer Psycho. Erin

If you want to stay with Ebonite, maybe the NVD or the re-released The One. As for the weight question, you want all of your equipment to be the same weight, so if you are going up in weight you will want to invest in a spare ball of the same weight and just get rid of the Tornado.

I personally think the Ebonite NVD might be too much ball for you. I have one and I rarely break it out. I definitely bring it out only on extremely heavy oil shots and sport shots. Depending on your budget, you might want to look at a Track Kinetic Pearl or Uprising. The Uprising is going to be a bit stronger than the pearl, but I find that I use the Kinetic pearl the most on normal conditions. It is probably the most versatile ball in my bag, along with my Uprising, which is drilled for more mid lane recovery and not length. Track has a great lineup of equipment and is also made by Ebonite, so you stay in the family. If you are want to be strict and stay with Ebonite, than I would probably check out The One, which is probably going to be a little bit more expensive, or possibly a Playmaker which has good backend and wont break the bank. If you can afford it, go with The One. Great ball, and one of the more proven balls out there.

So your saying that the NVD has to much hook? And what about the Columbia 300 resurgence? how is it?

very dull balls, you will need heavy oil and lots of it up front. Plus you'll need to have some pretty good ball speed on your side. Remember that they might not be the biggest hooking ball on the condition you are playing on. Plus whatever your style is, rev dominant or speed dominant, will also weigh in on what's going to be best for you. And it might not always be the most expensive ball in the line. For example, I'm speed dominant. And my NVD was not retaining enough energy in the 4 different houses I tried it in. So I polished it. Polished its better, but tends to miss the mid lane a bit. You are used to the reaction of a Tornado. Those top line balls you have mentioned are like night and day compared to the ball you use. First of all, all the Tornadoes these days come polished. So you are making a change from a polished ball to a dull ball. Plus you are then going from entry level to top performance level. Its not that you couldn't handle a NVD or Resurgance, but your lane conditions and experience might not get the most of out those balls right now. You are growing and at 15, a 14lb ball is not unusual, though most young men in your age group are throwing 15 or will be throwing 15 soon. So it might be a transition ball for you, this 14lb ball. You might not stay in it too long before you gain enough strength to move up to 15. So the investment of the tip top performance ball might not be worth it right now. Especially when you consider the reaction and performance of some of the mid range balls like the Hammer Doom line, the Rivals (though they are dull expect the new one coming out in Oct) and the Brunswick Swarm and Copperhead (dull). The resurgence I think would be too much ball too. That's a heavy oil ball. My partner in my PBA league this past summer only used his resurgence on the shark pattern. He used a Total NV and a Hammer Black Widow Pearl for everything else. Maybe a Total NV with a length drilling would suit you well. I'd go up to 14lb and pick up a 14lb spare ball to go along with it. My spare ball is 1lb less because it was my first ball and I went up in weight since I got it. I tend to throw it too hard and become inaccurate with it. I plan on getting a 15lb spare ball but the money isn't there right now. I'm sure you can handle 14lb but I would suggest to try 15lb. You'll get better carry and more pin action.

Erin was saying go mid level ball but it might be a good idea to make the jump to 15 lbs since you might outgrow the 14 lb ball very quickly. No matter which weight you go up to, you want to make sure all your equipment will be that weight or else your timing can really be thrown off when using a different ball.

As much as I want to, there is no way I can go up to a 15 pound ball, I am bery small for my age, only 5'6". And I have thrown a 15 which I can't get very much speed at all behind it.

Mid level ball would be the way to go. Ebonite offers the Gamebreaker and Playmaker. Columbia has the Dead Flush or Rival. Hammer has the Psycho or Vibe. Storm Street Rod would be a nice addition for you also.

I'd personally recommend the Storm Street Rod or Brunswick Avalanche Solid. I can speak for the latter though, which is an awesome ball at its price point. If you bowl on medium and lighter I don't think the ball can be beat. As for ball weight, 14lb will probably be good for you from a 12lb. At some point you may be ready to go up to 15lb, which is why a mid price ball is recommended for now. But if you never really feel like you can handle the weight, don't worry about it because sometimes 14lb will perform better for you.

So the Gamebreaker and playmaker is still going to give me a lot more reaction than my tornado?

Pretty much anything but another entry level ball or plastic is going to give you more reaction than your Tornado.

Alright I thought so, sometime when my brother comes with me to bowl (doesnt get to much except for when our league is going on) I will make a video and post it in this thread so maybe you guys can see how I bowl and help me narrow everything down.

Just a bit of clarification here. I don't really think you should make the jump from 12 to 15 at once. Therefore, going to 14 is fine, but I would not invest in the most expensive equipment doing so because you will be sooner or later going to 15, both with your strike and spare ball. Size is not always a good indicator of how much you can throw. Did you see Amanda Burgone on TV this morning? There are plenty of teenage boys that are built same as you. They all will probably end up at 15lbs sooner rather then later. But I would not make the jump from 12 to 15, because I think you are a little late moving out of the 12lber. Its too big a jump right away, therefore, I would not get into a very expensive 14 right now.

I wouldn't go to a heavier ball until your wrist is strong enough to handle a heavier ball. If you can easily do the strength test described in Ron Clifton's tip: http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/tip20.htmand you are able to keep your wrist in position until the release, then you may want to look into going to a heavier ball. If you can't do the strength test or the release, but think you should move up in weight because you are 15 years old and your age should match your ball weight, or you are throwing the 12lb ball too hard, then you should learn to bowl instead of throw the ball. Let the ball swing your arm and just keep your wrist in position until the release, when you can do this, move up in weight to a 14lb ball, then go to a 15 when your wrist has caught up in strength again. It is better to bowl properly with a light ball than to toss a heavy ball poorly, even if you would score better for now with the heavier ball, the investment of learning to bowl properly will pay off down the road, and prevent you from having to unlearn many bad habits that will follow with bowling with a ball that is too heavy.

Well I think I have narrowed things down to three balls, all are within in my price range. I just hope you guys can help me out because I dont want to go wrong with my purchase. The three: Ebonite The one, Ebonite Playmaker, and Ebonite Gamebreaker. I haven't yet decided which to get. I think the one has the most reaction from what I've seen and I'm so far leaning towards it. Also, I read on a different webpage where someone had said they owned the one and it lost its hook within three weeks. I dont know if that was from not cleaning it or what but it kinda scared me but I dk.

Also, I read on a different webpage where someone had said they owned the one and it lost its hook within three weeks. I dont know if that was from not cleaning it or what but it kinda scared me but I dk. First off Justin, that story about the ball losing its hook in about three weeks could be any of these: That person was either neglent in cleaning their ball and probably didn't post that they bowl about 9-12 games a week in league and who knows how many others in practice. Or it was someone who was ignorant and doesn't understand that it takes about 9 games to get a ball's true reaction to show. Also it could be that the person altered the surface or changed something in their approach and blamed the ball and not themselves. Regardless, try not to hold too much stock in reviews and posts like that. On the weight issue, I definately agree with Coach Jim and you should move up in weight only if your wrist can handle it. And I agree with Erin about having your balls all be the same weight. It definately helps when it comes to timing, balance and release. As for the ball choices, it seems like everyone hit the major companies if you couldn't stay with Ebonite. And if you don't I would suggest The Odyssey, the Illusion or some of the balls in the planetary line from Roto-Grip. Perhaps, the Uprising or I think the Tantrum or Temper from Track would be good. And i think it's Chubbs that absolutely loves the 900 Global Break and Break Pearl. Although it seems like you've mad up your mind on those three from Ebonite. I think the One is the strongest of the three. But it sounds like the Gamebreaker is more of what you're looking for.

By maintaining it you mean just cleaning after each round I play?
And thanks Demolitionman, I think that I have decided to go with 13, 14 may be just a little bit to much for my wrist to handle, so hopefully I will still be able to get more carry with the 13 than the 12

By maintaining we mean cleaning after every session they are used, whether its practice, league or tournament, deep cleaning after every so many game depending on the ball, in the case of duller balls around 20-30 games and polished or pearls around 30-40 and also taking them back to OOB condition.

Right. Another note, using a strong ball on dry lanes will make the ball hook less than it would with more oil. The expert whose ball died after 9 games may have run into that. That's very interesting cgeorg. I didn't know that could happen. Could that be the possible explaination behind why my Black Widow moves more on house shots than my Cell?

cgeorg, So bowling on the wooden lanes I normally bowl on that are only oiled half the time could tae the hook out of my ball? Would that mean it just wouldn't hook then, or would lose its hook for good.
And Infernocal, when you say deep clean exactly what do you mean?

Justin, it's not that it will permanently kill your ball, it's just that a super strong ball will not hook that much on dry lanes. A weaker ball will actually hook more. However, dry lanes will increase the wear on your Track area, so you will need to resurface the ball more often.

any of those Ebonite balls are about 100 bucks online, personally I'd throw another $20 and get a BW bite or Venom for $124 shipped + drilling. What does that extra $20 get? A well know ball throughout any house and alot more on deck pin action. and yah you gotta clean them after every set/night of bowling. cleaners can be bought for the Pro Shop or online. I like Ebonite Powerhouse, works well and havn't seen any life drop from any of the new balls I got.

How is a venom or BW bite going to get more pin action?
And I just checked into, its 124.99 then you have to pay extra for the drilling. But I'm probably getting whatever ball I get from my local bowling alley anyways.

Typically, Hammer's stuff leans more toward the skid/flip reaction while Ebonite's reaction signature is more even. It comes down to what suits you best. If you need a wicked snap from your equipment to generate good entry angles and prevent weak corner pin leaves, then Hammer might suit you beter. If you ring alot of ten pins or leave other solid back row pins, then an Ebonite ball that starts up a little sooner with a more gradual move on the backend might be what you need.

most balls can be either skid n flip or arc it more by moving the pin lower to PAP. The BW line sells for $210 drilled here at either of the proshops I go to. None carry the older Ebonite stuff like the playmaker, they are trying to move the lastest NV line which is more like 230 drilled. One of my friends/teammate has the Ebonite Complete NV and the lastest NVD and they fit my hand as well so I goof off with them sometimes. he has the C-NV goes long, would be about 5" from my pap and the other is 4" from PAP. The C-NV has more pin action then the NVD, the NVD needs ALOT of oil to carry power into the pocket. My Storm Dimenion is alos 4" from PAP and I can play the DIm and NVD back to back on the same line, but when the NVD flips on downlane, it weaker when it hits flush. Where as the Dim flips with alot of power and smashed the pocket. The NVD seems more picky when it hits the pocket. His complete NV plays simular to my kintec but a lil less hook. Ball isn't picky at all unlike the NVD, it carrys ALOT of power into the pocket. If I were to buy an Ebonite Ball today, it would be the Complete NV hands down. I feel my Dimension is better then the NVD for heavy oil. How does the BW venom compare to the Complete NV, simular, goes deep, likes speed and loves added revs, but need revs for better pin action. But the Venom has an strong aggressive back end that I LOVE. My buddy hated the aggresive back end and I bought the Venom from him. New, the BW venom is $20-$25 cheaper then any of the Ebonite NV balls and has very simular performance. Use that $20 and get some ball cleaner.

cgeorg,
And Infernocal, when you say deep clean exactly what do you mean? Cal is talking about things like getting your ball baked, putting it in your dishwasher (not advisable it might kill the dishwasher), or submerging the ball in heated water. Each does the same thing that heat basically does to human skin. They open the pores in the coverstock and allow oil in the coverstock to flow out.

Jisigone, thanks for the info but I don't think I am wanting anything in the nv series anymore, I was talking about Ebonite "The one" bowling ball, it was an old one to but they just re-made it and came back out with it. Demolition man, I thought that was what he was talking about by deep clean but wasn't sure, thanks!

Yup, that's what I mean. Deep cleaning and then sanding and/or polishing a ball can make it be like new again.

Do I have to sand it after every deep clean? or is that just something that needs to be done every once in a wile? And can polishing and sanding be done on my own? Also, is there a certain way it needs to be polished or sanded to make the ball like it was and not change it to a completely different thing? (sorry about all the questions)

Cals, talking about reapplying the surface to the ball whether it be polish or sanding the ball in order to get your ball reaction back to how you like it. Really, I think it's really up to you. If you can do it great if not, go a little while and then have your Pro Shop resurface, rejuvenate and reapply the surface.

I don't know if I would be able to do it or not, but if I can, then where do I get the materials I need?

You can't get an even finish without a spinner, and you definitely can't get a good polish without one. Make friends with your Pro Shop operator and bring your own supplies, and they'll probably let you use their spinner. Deep cleaning should only be done once your ball is starting to lose its reaction - it generally won't be necessary for at least 30 games. Less absorbent balls can go much longer than that, and some balls never really need it. The One series was pretty absorbent though, and you may need a deep cleaning every 40 or 50 games. When doing this, it's usually best to sand to a low grit to open the pores more, do the cleaning, then refinish to your target surface. If you want to be on the safe side, have your Pro Shop deep clean (rejuvenate) the ball when necessary. If you want to go out on a limb, you can use one of the methods listed. I bake mine.

Alright thanks, I have been thinking about getting a ball spinner, but they are so expensive.

Justin: Spinners are pricey. But, if you have someone who you can go buy it with, it becomes cheaper. Then, if you are going to stick with the sport for a while, it will pay for it in the amount of money you save from getting a ball resurfaced at a Pro Shop. When my buddy bought his, I think he paid $250 (this was 13 years ago or so). It cost $5 to get a ball done. Now, it is more like $25-$30. If you buy one and your friends want to use it, have them buy your supplies. Tell them: You buy me all of the stuff, and I will resurface your stuff every X games. Drives your cost of owning it lower. One thing I will tell you, make sure you resurface in a contained area. Water gets everywhere. A cardboard box or a wash basin works well.

There's more to refinishing a ball then having a spinner. You need the abralon pads (expensive) and polishes etc...... The abralon pads do not last more then a few times of use before they are significantly less "gritty". If you get one, you'll need to find out how to use it properly. Our shop charges $5 for touch ups and minor finishes. We rarely have the full $25 resurface come in. Erin

Full resurfacing is taking multiple grits of pads to a ball starting with a real low grit like 320 and workinig your way up to 2000 (this is to get all of the deep scratches out). Touch-ups are using the last pad on them only. At least, that is my interpretation.

Oh alright that makes sense. So just a touch up would be using that 2000 or 4000?
