I am getting ready to get a new bowling ball here in aroud a month or so. Right now I have an Ebonite tornado and a spare ball. I don't get all that many revs on it. I would like more hook in the backend but still hook around 3/4 down the lane. I want something for more of heavy oil conditions. I would like to stay with Ebonite but if not, its no big deal. Any suggestions on what would be the right ball for me. I also have one more question. At the moment I am throwing a 12 pound ball. I would like for my next one to be a 14 pound. Will it be alright for me to get that and still use my 12 pound spare ball and 12 pound tornado for drier lanes. Thanks in advance.

If you go up in weight like that on your strike ball, you'll want to also go up on weight on your spare ball. As for a ball, maybe the Ebonite Clash or Hammer Psycho.

If you want to stay with Ebonite, maybe the NVD or the re-released The One. As for the weight question, you want all of your equipment to be the same weight, so if you are going up in weight you will want to invest in a spare ball of the same weight and just get rid of the Tornado.

I personally think the Ebonite NVD might be too much ball for you. I have one and I rarely break it out. I definitely bring it out only on extremely heavy oil shots and sport shots. Depending on your budget, you might want to look at a Track Kinetic Pearl or Uprising. The Uprising is going to be a bit stronger than the pearl, but I find that I use the Kinetic pearl the most on normal conditions. It is probably the most versatile ball in my bag, along with my Uprising, which is drilled for more mid lane recovery and not length. Track has a great lineup of equipment and is also made by Ebonite, so you stay in the family.

If you are want to be strict and stay with Ebonite, than I would probably check out The One, which is probably going to be a little bit more expensive, or possibly a Playmaker which has good backend and wont break the bank. If you can afford it, go with The One. Great ball, and one of the more proven balls out there.

So your saying that the NVD has to much hook? And what about the Columbia 300 resurgence? how is it?

very dull balls, you will need heavy oil and lots of it up front. Plus you'll need to have some pretty good ball speed on your side. Remember that they might not be the biggest hooking ball on the condition you are playing on. Plus whatever your style is, rev dominant or speed dominant, will also weigh in on what's going to be best for you. And it might not always be the most expensive ball in the line.

For example, I'm speed dominant. And my NVD was not retaining enough energy in the 4 different houses I tried it in. So I polished it. Polished its better, but tends to miss the mid lane a bit.

You are used to the reaction of a Tornado. Those top line balls you have mentioned are like night and day compared to the ball you use. First of all, all the Tornadoes these days come polished. So you are making a change from a polished ball to a dull ball. Plus you are then going from entry level to top performance level. Its not that you couldn't handle a NVD or Resurgance, but your lane conditions and experience might not get the most of out those balls right now.

You are growing and at 15, a 14lb ball is not unusual, though most young men in your age group are throwing 15 or will be throwing 15 soon. So it might be a transition ball for you, this 14lb ball. You might not stay in it too long before you gain enough strength to move up to 15. So the investment of the tip top performance ball might not be worth it right now. Especially when you consider the reaction and performance of some of the mid range balls like the Hammer Doom line, the Rivals (though they are dull expect the new one coming out in Oct) and the Brunswick Swarm and Copperhead (dull).

The resurgence I think would be too much ball too. That's a heavy oil ball. My partner in my PBA league this past summer only used his resurgence on the shark pattern. He used a Total NV and a Hammer Black Widow Pearl for everything else. Maybe a Total NV with a length drilling would suit you well. I'd go up to 14lb and pick up a 14lb spare ball to go along with it. My spare ball is 1lb less because it was my first ball and I went up in weight since I got it. I tend to throw it too hard and become inaccurate with it. I plan on getting a 15lb spare ball but the money isn't there right now. I'm sure you can handle 14lb but I would suggest to try 15lb. You'll get better carry and more pin action.

So you are sayin that I should move up to a mid level ball for now? And are you sayin to stick with 12 pounds or move to 14 or 15? And thanks Erin for your help.

Erin was saying go mid level ball but it might be a good idea to make the jump to 15 lbs since you might outgrow the 14 lb ball very quickly. No matter which weight you go up to, you want to make sure all your equipment will be that weight or else your timing can really be thrown off when using a different ball.

As much as I want to, there is no way I can go up to a 15 pound ball, I am bery small for my age, only 5'6". And I have thrown a 15 which I can't get very much speed at all behind it.
