Well I figured that this would be a good thread to get started. Whenever you go bowling, wether it be a league, practice, or just for fun. Pop open this thread and tell us your scores, how you played, and so on.
Well I'll start us off, today I went mainly to work on hitting the same mark, not really paying much attention to the scores. But I scored a 153, 155, and 191. Not that well of a day. It seemed like a was doing what I needed to with my first ball. I'm gonna try to work on that more tommorow though.

So what seemed to be the problem with the spare shots then?
I don't have score for this week or day but I'll have some tomorrow. Anyways here's last Friday's. A 622 series with a 182, 236, 209. I pretty much focused on hitting my mark, reading my ball's reaction and the lanes, and hitting my spares (I had 4 opens on the night). Not too bad considering some of previous scores (i.e. 498, 528). I could've shot better if in the first game I hadn't shone up late and had to bowl three frames in a row, and two of them were opens.

So what seemed to be the problem with the spare shots then? Very good point, but considering I missed most of them to the left I was left with quite a few splits. I did miss one single pin though Not good at all. Tommorow I am also goona work on those single pins too.We got a match monday so I gotta be ready. Considering I am in there atleast 5 and sometimes 7 days a week, I think I will be.

198 , 144 , 219 for 561 series, Dropped average about 2 pins, from 196 to 194. Struggled in the second game, a couple washouts, even the 4,7 - 6,10 through the nose.
All season the 2nd game has been my achiles heel. next week position round!!

I wasn't sure if my bowling career was over because of bad knees. The left knee has been diagnosed as bone on bone while the right knee has been damaged due to a bicycle accident. I was only using a cane two weeks ago and have felt better because of cortizone injections in both knees. I finally found a knee support that allows me to bowl pain free. I shot a 592 in my senior league yesterday, a definite morale booster.

Last sunday during league I bowled 202, 157, 195 for a series of 554. First game was a clean game, hit target and got a lot of carries. Second game missed alot of 7 pins and got a few splits. Third game got more carries and started to string strikes towards the end. Gotta find a way to carry more and leave less 7 pins.

A teammate of mine, a lady Coach, had a knee replacement on her sliding knee, and reconstructive surgery on the other in early June. She plans to return to the team in late October. Good luck.

I discussed knee surgery with my doctor, a orthopaedic surgeon, and he said I wasn't ready for surgery yet - Maybe some time in the future but not now. I asked him who does he operate on and he told me he operates on those patients who come to see him in a wheelchair. I also discussed my situation with the proprietor of the bowling alley where I bowl. His knees are worse than mine. He just confirmed what my doctor told me that surgery is a last resort.

I threw a 151, 172, and 145 for a 468 series.
I couldn't find any consistentcy in my approach with my 16 pound balls. I have an approach that seems to be working for me but I feel like I have to force my 16 pound balls in it to make them work. Gamewise I missed way too many easy spares and had way too many opens.

Do you throw a straight ball at your spares or a reactive ball? Were the splits resolutes of high hits low hits, what?

Demolition man, I throw A straight ball at my spares. The splits were coming from me hitting to high on the pocket, leaving 6, 10, 7, and things like that.

I also discussed my situation with the proprietor of the bowling alley where I bowl. His knees are worse than mine. He just confirmed what my doctor told me that surgery is a last resort. I had my ACL repaired in Feb. My doc said that we had 2 choices. 1) We could do therapy and hope to get back most of my strength in my knee and most of my mobility. But, it will never be the way it was. 2) Repair my ACL and then go through therapy. After that, he said I should be back to 100%. Almost 8 months later and I think I am 100% back. The decision for surgery for me was an easy one. I have 3 small kids at home and want to be able to keep up with them as they get older. My mom is in her 60s and has a partially torn Achilles. She is wearing a brace and doing therapy. All depends on where you want to be in a year.

So, let me get this straight. You have to get worse before you can get better? People coming in with a wheelchair seem like they waited too long.

Justin, for your spare shooting you have to remember that the pins are 60ft away so linear perspective starts to confuse your eyes and your brain. Obviously, this can be countered by choosing a closer target but even then you can still have troubles. Bowling is kind of like pool in the sense that it is all about angles and arcs. No worries though. It might take a little time, but try to find a consistent angle to throw at your spares, and most of them will be same with a little tweak here and there. And you probably already know how to adjust for high hits so I'll just leave that alone.

He was telling me that I needed a closer target, and I was saying that I have a target? The arrows, which I'm pretty sure they are close enough. Attitude?

Just bowled with a friend of mine. While there, I found there was trouble with the lane machine that has been causing all of my trouble. I changed lines and went to a weaker ball. I shot 188, 210, 235. And, this on a shot that I could hardly break 500 on. Once, I knew what the shot was, it made a difference.

New shoes with only one slide sole. Took a couple of frames to get used to that. I also tried a different line all four games, see what was working for me tonight. 216,169,186,197 One thing I've noticed with my new swing is that when I miss, I'm leaving a lot more splits - usually involving the 4 and the 10. I'm going to see about getting with the coach again next week and get some video.

I subbed tonight on the dreaded shot. I stood inside about 30 and targeted 12 at the break. I noticed it was also speed sensitive. Too slow and I crossed over. Too fast, and I didn't make it up.
Well, I also found the 2 lanes playing different, too. Washout, strike, washout, spare, 2-10, spare. The left ad less reaction than the right. Fiddles around trying to find a line on the left lane and finished with a 169. I followed it with a 225 then a 215. So, I guess I may have succeeded.
It's a far cry from my 169 average I have been fighting. It's about normal.
By the way, I got out to 5 once and it slid right into the gutter.

After a 685 and 698 series, tonight the lane mechanic changed the shot. We bowl second shift and I shot 551. Reason why the mechanic changed the shot???? Scratch league (4 days ago) told him that the lanes were breaking down too fast and they had to move too much during their first shift set on Monday. So mechanic put out enough oil from gutter to gutter to make sure that the scratch crankers didn't have to adjust so much. Resulting in a real mess by the time you get behind a mixed handicap league and you yourself are in a mixed handicap league. This is the house that normally puts out more then 80 units of oil on a 40' top hat pattern, synthetic lanes. And its apparently not enough oil for the scratch league so, now our league basically has just a flattish carried down shot to the pocket. Rocket to the pocket off the corner is what I'd call it. I moved right all night, put away my Tidalwave, put away my NVD, and used my dull sanded Cell off the corner, just a straight shot to the 1,3 pocket. Ended up about 7 to 8 boards right of where I've been the last couple weeks and further right with my target, just pointing it to the pocket. Spares were an issue, because they usually had more then 3 to 5 pins in them (I picked up the 1,5,8, 9). Even when you were in the pocket, carry was still an issue, but at least I was now hitting the head pin. That's what you get when you have a lane mechanic (and the manager and owners) that doesn't bowl and a scratch league that brings in a lot of money. They dictate the shot. Just when you think that this is what you will have to deal with next week, you never know. First three weeks were not bad. Could be changed back. All depends on how the rest of the week's leagues bowled. But Friday, two shifts, only person that shot anything was also the highest average in our association. I set off the rumor that I shot over 700, that usually gets the mechanic to change the shot, so at least we'll probably have something different next week. Got to be better then this week. Erin

Erin

He was telling me that I needed a closer target, and I was saying that I have a target? The arrows, which I'm pretty sure they are close enough. Attitude? Justin, I wasn't telling you that you needed a closer target. I sound obvisously and used the conjunction "but," implying that you're on the right Track and giving you advice or something that you could add to what you were doing. If you read the post again, what I was trying to get across is that don't worry about it, spare shooting is all about angles and you have to find the ones that work for you. Developing your eye for the spares takes time and then every now and again you suddenly go blind or get punched in the eye, like my 502 last night. Besides a closer target and you'd be doing the Wes Malott thing where he looks down at the lane during his approach and I'm sure that you want to do that.

[censored]!!! went for a few games today, 149/160 . i only have the one ball at the moment( Track up-rising) somedays it plays perfect but other days i feel i need something without so much zip (like today!) it just breaks too early on certain conditions. i just ordered a plastic vizy (golf ball) for spares a couple of days ago, so hopefully i can be a bit more consistent in that aspect of the game when i get it. im looking at getting 1 or 2 more balls to go with my up-rising to round out the arsenal as you say. any suggestions on what i should look at? i noticed that Howiegroove and 180fury both have the up-rising so maybe they could point me in the right direction...Cheers

anything Track makes is fine with me. i own a kinetic energy and love it. it would be where you want it to be. which is right behind the up rising. i move to it when the up rising is too much, and it doesn't hesitate to take'em down very very good ball. also had a twisted fury at one time and its a pretty good ball too. i would look into getting maybe a kinetic. tracks on a roll with me and i would recommend them to anyone. also mite try a kinetic. its a little weaker than the kinetic energy. but theres also a kinetic pearl which is suppose to be good. i would like to have one of those my self. hope this helps good luck upriser.

Thanks for the advice 180fury, i'll have a look over here and see if they are avaliable. actually, my local bowling centre doesnt even have a Pro Shop, just a couple of balls (visy) on the counter and a guy that comes in one night a week to drill em. its just not as professional as it seems over in the U.S.A. i'll probley have to get it from over thier again (usa)....costs just as much for the ball as it is to send it...anyway, cheers once again and good bowling!!

I try to stick with anything in the Ebonite family ( Ebonite, Track, Hammer, and Columbia 300). Thats all I have other than my spare ball, which is a Roto-Grip, I have the same family. My personal opinion of Brunswick balls is that they are made cheaply. The quality has gone way downhill since they moved their production facilities to Mexico. Gotta love American made bowling balls.

No worries. It happens. Mostly because you (meaning anyone who does online posting or writing) can't tell the tone of voice that anybody else is using and sometimes the ideas don't come out as clearly as the writer thinks they are. So again no worries. Sh*t happens.

Alright thanks.
Well today I bowled terrible terrible terrible. Shot a 147, 155, and 162. I missed to many single pin spares, I dont know if it was just cause I was a little nervous with it being our first highschool match of the season or what, but I should never miss them like that. It seems like my spare shooting has been getting worse! =(

I kind of stumbled into a good score tonight in my Monday night mixed league. The approaches were tacky and I was constantly ending up off-balance. The captain on the opposing team was sticking also.
Somehow I ended up with a 651 - all games were over 200. I consider myself to be a 180 bowler so all in all, this was a strange night but I'm not complaining.
My knees felt good tonight despite the sticking.

It's weird because all of sudden you're spare will be there and then it will suddenly disappear. I wouldn't worry about it too much, from the sounds of it, you were just nervous. It happened to me in the CA State tournament, excepy my scores were more sparadic.

Alright thanks Demolition man, we got practice today, and I'm really going to focus on those single pins. We have a match tommorow so hopefully I will do better.
