I toss enough poorly delivered balls that I don't always make an adjustment for leaving a washout. I left an 8-t today and made no adjustment for what I know was a poorly thrown ball.] Of course, you never adjust off of a poorly thrown shot. My concern is that in the original post Craig seemed more worried about figuring out how to convert a spare due to a bad shot that missed the pocket than working on hitting the pocket and limiting the washouts left. If sometimes you're in the pocket and other times you're leaving enough washouts that you're now worried about having to convert them to fill frames, there are other issues with mechanics that need to be addressed. As for what I do to throw the ball straight, read infernocal's post, it will save me some typing! Mark

Leaving it "more and more" means some adjustment in technique or tactic is indicated. Someone told me a LONG time ago: Rule #1...to have any chance to clear the deck, you need to hit the pin closest to you. That goes for the first attempt as well as the spare. Obvious? You bet!

i actually move a bit to my right(being a right handed bowler), about 3 or 4 boards, and throw the ball as i would for a 1st shot that would normally hit the pocket. usually when i leave a washout, i missed my mark at the arrows by about 2 or 3 boards, not because my line was wrong. i think i'm probably the oddball of the group, but this is how i always have thrown at washouts because i don't throw a straight ball too well. i think if i could have made the ten pin about 3 more times out of ten than normal, i may have averaged about 5 pins higher.

Well, Fri Nite, I left the washout 3 times, and picked it up all 3 from the left side. But, that also tells you how poorly I bowled. I was higher a lot more times than I rolled it out.

This particular washout I like to go from the rightand throw across the lane at the 1,2 pocket with a somewhat straight ball. Another thing you could try is to go from the left and aim for the 1,3 pocket (aim as if you were trying a high shot).
