I never really had the chance to really think about a previous league issue that happened at my house last Fall/Winter until the new Fall/Winter leagues started now. A lot of talking was going around during the Summer leagues, but I never gave it much thought. I didn't realize how it could possibly affect anyone, really.

The said league was a Friday night, 4-person team league, in which the first place team won a grand prize of $5,000 dollars. There were two halves of the season. The first place team of the first half and second half played eachother in a roll off style format to see who won the grand prize. An all ladies team took first, beating a mixed team by 3 points of 4. This is where the problem came in...

I subbed on this league during both halves, and I thought everyone was quite friendly. Apparently the team that won the prize had a problem with one teammate during the first half of the league. She was disruptive (cursing, bad behavior, inebriated), and also rude to her teammates. They were in 3rd to last place in the first half, and voted to kick her off the team because of her said behavior. It was a legitimate reason, but she didn't leave on her own accord - the team voted, and booted her off.

They replaced her with another bowler for the second half and took first place for the second half. They won the roll off and took the grand prize of the previously mentioned sum. This is where it got interesting. They gave the bowler from the first half the total amount per bowler of what they placed in the first half. It amounted to like 60 dollars. Meanwhile, they gave the bowler who filled in the total part of the sum of the second half (finishing first place, was like 600 dollars). The first bowler then contacted the local association about the problem and found out she was entitled to winnings of the overall finish of both halves (hence, first place).

I guess after much discussing, arguing, and an official decision, the team captain has to come up with the remainder of the money to pay the first bowler. The secretary of the league and myself had an extensive discussion and we both agreed to one thing - the second bowler who filled in should split half her earnings with the first bowler - and I guess this is how they will do it in case of such an event in the future.

Apparently problems like this have happened in the past, but no one has claimed to the local association that they should be owed money (either not wanting to cause trouble, or they don't know they deserve it). This is the first case of something like this in our house. In any event, it was a pretty big deal and almost resulted in some sanctions being suspended. I was wondering if anyone else encountered a problem like this, what did your or/that league do about it?

Never had such a issue but have had a person quit because of work last fall/winter on my team and then we found replacement. I think how they did it was took prize money per bowler, depending on what place we placed. So we say we took 3 rd place and its $300 per person divided it into how many games in season then they multiplied by how many games each bowler bowled and that was there prize money. So yeah they did take prize money of the total season.

Right, and that makes the most logical sense to me. Since both bowlers bowled one half, each should be entitled to half of the overall winnings per bowler. Or in case of a shorter/longer duration, by what % of the season the bowler participated in.

But I guess the second bowler was not required to split her winnings, and she had no intention of doing so - so it came down to the responsibility of the team captain.

Can a captain remove a member of the team during the season?

Rule 104a, Item 3 states, it is within the captain’s authority to remove any bowler permanently from a team. However, the captain must furnish good and sufficient reason upon appeal to the league’s board.

If bowlers are removed, and are not dismissed under Rule 115a, they are eligible to receive a prorated share of the team prize money at the end of the season, based on the number of games bowled and the amount of prize money won by the team. In addition, the bowlers receive any special prizes for which they have qualified.

I guess that's the liability for removing a player. It seems the player does get a pro rated amount. But to me this rule doesn't say that the pro rate is based on all the games of the season. It could be interpreted as the number of games in which the player participated in.

Does the league make envelopes for each bowler or for each team? Your answer will tell you who went wrong. Whoever it was, they shouldn't have given the second bowler all the money. What should have happened is that the winnings should have been paid out according to the number of weeks bowled.

If you have 30 weeks and each bowler paid for 15, they should each get half of what any one full season bowler got. If one bowled for 14 weeks and the other 16, one would get 14/30ths and the other would get 16/30ths.

It wasn't the second bowlers responsibility to figure this out. It was whoever was doling out the money in the fist place.

EDIT: and I see Erin already said what I did smile

It would seem to me that if a bowler bowled 1/2 the season and either quit or was removed, then they're entitled to 1/2 the prize money for their slot since they paid in 1/2 of the prize money for that slot. I don't think it's fair that the bowler get the share for whatever half they bowl regardless of if they left by their own accord or not. I know that I would give the "booted bowler" their equal half regardless of whether I didn't like them or not. They get the amount they put in for.

Sounds like sour grapes by the captain and I think it's fair that the association put the culpability on the captain to come up with the rest of the money.

Thank you Erin for that post. I guess this is why the team captain owes her 625 dollars. That's exactly half of the earnings per bowler for the result of the overall season. She bowled half of the season/half the amount of games.

They finished first, so she is owed 625 of the 1250 that is amounted to each bowler. What they tried to do was give her the money for their finishing place of the first half, in which she bowled. That's a no-no, and she had every right to take it up with the local association IMO.

Makes perfect sense now. I guess everyone will have to be more cautious when something like this comes up in the future.
