I never really had the chance to really think about a previous league issue that happened at my house last Fall/Winter until the new Fall/Winter leagues started now. A lot of talking was going around during the Summer leagues, but I never gave it much thought. I didn't realize how it could possibly affect anyone, really.
The said league was a Friday night, 4-person team league, in which the first place team won a grand prize of $5,000 dollars. There were two halves of the season. The first place team of the first half and second half played eachother in a roll off style format to see who won the grand prize. An all ladies team took first, beating a mixed team by 3 points of 4. This is where the problem came in...
I subbed on this league during both halves, and I thought everyone was quite friendly. Apparently the team that won the prize had a problem with one teammate during the first half of the league. She was disruptive (cursing, bad behavior, inebriated), and also rude to her teammates. They were in 3rd to last place in the first half, and voted to kick her off the team because of her said behavior. It was a legitimate reason, but she didn't leave on her own accord - the team voted, and booted her off.
They replaced her with another bowler for the second half and took first place for the second half. They won the roll off and took the grand prize of the previously mentioned sum. This is where it got interesting. They gave the bowler from the first half the total amount per bowler of what they placed in the first half. It amounted to like 60 dollars. Meanwhile, they gave the bowler who filled in the total part of the sum of the second half (finishing first place, was like 600 dollars). The first bowler then contacted the local association about the problem and found out she was entitled to winnings of the overall finish of both halves (hence, first place).
I guess after much discussing, arguing, and an official decision, the team captain has to come up with the remainder of the money to pay the first bowler. The secretary of the league and myself had an extensive discussion and we both agreed to one thing - the second bowler who filled in should split half her earnings with the first bowler - and I guess this is how they will do it in case of such an event in the future.
Apparently problems like this have happened in the past, but no one has claimed to the local association that they should be owed money (either not wanting to cause trouble, or they don't know they deserve it). This is the first case of something like this in our house. In any event, it was a pretty big
deal and almost resulted in some sanctions being suspended. I was wondering if anyone else encountered a problem like this, what did your or/that league do about it?
