I just stumbled upon this on youtube. I'm not sure what event it was from or when it happened, but it seems to be from England. I found the crowd reaction to be hysterical.
(Just watch to find out, it's more fun this way.)
That is one of the nastiest leaves of the 5-7-10 I have ever seen, that shot rolled out big time. It makes me chuckle because I've still never left it and he has! Of course, there's many other things in his career that he's done that I haven't and never will.

Wild even on a pocket shot... Funny thing is he could have picked that up by rolling his plastic nice and slow. I've seen my 9 year old step son pick one up LOL.

Our association, like others, has a patch for leaving this. Its one of our most popular patches. Funny if it was the bowlers' fault I would not see 90% of them coming from one of our 12 centers. No kidding about 90% all come from this one center. I've seen bowlers that are beginners and those that are high level scratch bowlers leave the sour Apple (aka Lily) at this center. So I'm not convinced that its always the bowler's fault.

Agreed on that one. I believe that a little of it is lane conditions to get the ball to finish a bit weak, but the big factor to me is how lively the pins are due to the construction of the pin deck and kickbacks. From what I've read and heard, the front to back slope of the pin deck matters a lot too. If it's sloped down a little, the ball loses contact with the pin deck and will deflect more than if it was in contact with the pin deck, thus leaving the 5 pin with more frequency. Combined with dead kickbacks and pin decks, you've got the perfect recipe for 5-7-10's.

It is usually a lack of entry angle that causes the sour Apple. Either the ball is burning up, or there is oil on the last few feet before and or through the pin deck, causing the ball to over deflect as it hits the pins. Heavy pins can also cause the ball to over deflect enough to leave some weird leaves. Ask anyone who has bowled on the 5lb pins at the hoinke.
I saw this leave at least 3 times last season by at least 3 different people at two separate houses. The first was by a teammate in a house known for its backend reaction. I think he was in too deep. One of the other times was a few lanes down at another center, again I think it was the angle and maybe some lack of lift. The third time was me at the same house as the second instance on the second shot, which means I tossed a gutter ball on the first shot. Come to think of it I might have left it twice myself last season, once at each house.

I was at a pba tour stop watching Nelson Burton Jr bowl, he ran out a shot that left the 5-7-10, he just knew it was a strike when it left his hand, all of us in the stands pointed and laughed. NBjr shot daggers at us, I thought I was going to have to call an ambulance for my friend, he was turning purple laughing.

At the one house that I bowl at you can have the sour Apple announced as a salt in the wound sort of thing, usually your teammates do it. But if you pick up the Sour Apple, Big Four or 7, 10 you get a patch or a pin.
