Hi everyone. I'm getting back into bowling after 6 years of only playing recreationally (I'm 21 now). I used to use a 12lb plastic ebonite maxim ball and had around a 130-140 average. I used a conventional grip and threw at the second arrow with small break at the end of my shot. Now that I want to get serious with the game again, I'm going to be purchasing a Hammer Anger next week. I don't mind adjusting my style and I'm going to be drilling for fingertips. My main question is about what weight of a ball I should attain. I'm a small guy, 5ft tall and about 140lbs. I my arm is relatively weak right now (could probably build it up) and I use a 3 step approach. My 12lber right now is comfortable but I feel like I could handle a 13lber. My question is whether that 13lber will work or if I should really work on building up towards that 14lb? Thanks!

Well I'm a pretty small guy, I'm 6 foot tall and weigh 143 and I throw 2 14lb's and 2 15lb's. You should be able to easily handle a 14lb if its fit to your hand correctly. More experienced posters will help you out the rest of the way. Good luck with your bowling!

if you dont have any physical handicap you should be able to handle a 14 lbs or even 15 lbs ball. We have a guy on our league who about your sixe but is about 65 years old and bowls with 15 lbs.

I would also recommend to get everything the same. If your getting Hammer Anger and going to get 14 or 15 lbs fingertip, i would replace your plastic spare ball and make it finger tip with the same weight.

BTW
Welcome to the Site.

I'm 6'1" or so, 125lb. I throw 15lb balls. Whether I should be throwing that much weight is debatable because of some of the problems I have in my physical game. However, at 140lb I see no problem throwing 15lb since I'm able to handle it all right. And you don't need a strong arm to be able to handle the weight, since you aren't supposed to use your muscles a lot if at all to swing the ball.

First I'd like to welcome you to the site PygmyBBQ.

As for your question. If you are going to be serious about bowling, then buy reactive balls of at least 14 lbs. I say this because most companies put a generic core below 14 lbs that just doesn't deliver the same power at the pins as the advanced cores that are part of the design.

I agree with Brandon with keeping everything the same across all balls including grip set up and inserts. I think with a little getting used to it, 15 or 16 lb balls aren't completely out of the question either.

Wow, I'm surprised how fast I got some many responses! Thanks for all the advice, this sure is a knowledgeable community. I guess I'll go for the 14lb and hopefully I'll just get used to it? Keep the advice coming! Thanks again.

You will get better ball reaction and carry with a 14 over a 13. The 13 will probably deflect more. As for the use of muscle, don't use it. That is what hurts your arm and tires you out. If your arm just swings like a pendulum, it won't hurt it at all.

I see what you guys are saying about using the momentum to get your ball going. However, what strength are you using to hold onto the ball on the back end of your swing? I realized that I don't even swing that far back even with a 12 lb, more of a 45 degrees.

A properly fitted ball stays on your hand by itself by centrifugal force until the release point. It holds onto the hand not the other way around. Again that is a properly fitted ball which might take a few times to get right. If you grip the ball, which with a conventional drill ball is almost mandatory, it leads to muscling the ball.

If your ball is fit properly it wont fall off your hand. Its a little of trust issue you got trust it wont fall on its own so you dont squeeze or muscle the ball. If you dont trust it you will probablly squeeze it and muscle it.
