Well I hit the lanes again on Saturday and I tried out some new things. I changed my timing a bit so the ball is passing my right leg while me left leg is on the third step. I compared my approach with those here that are better than I and some pro videos. The one thing other than my horrible swing that came out of the analysis was that it appeared as though I had late timing. My right leg was moving forward as the ball was passing it. I tried to change this so the ball was moving past it while my right leg was stationary. The first few swings of this video it appears to me that my swing is much straighter and the ball is much closer to my ankle... hopefully CoachJim will agree .
I also was making a serious attempt to keep my forearm square to my target line for as long as possible. I felt a noticable difference in the swing but comparing the video I'm seeing the slightest delay in rotating around the ball for my release.
One other thing I was making a serious attempt at changing was keeping my wrist cupped/loaded. You'll notice a difference in my release toward the middle of the video as this was around the point when I was making my conscious effort with this facet. The one major issue that crept up was that after a short time in bowling like this I was getting some numbness in my thumb and index finger; moreso in my thumb. I was able to still move them normally but it was as though the skin was numb. Finally after about 4 days my thumb has returned to normal but for some reason when I mimic the loaded wrist without a ball my index finger feels a bit numb and or pins 'n needles. This is only when I load my wrist. When I return the wrist to its normal position the sensation goes away. Perhaps this is due to my wrist being weak and I'm putting strain in areas not normally subjected to this type of strain. I'm hoping that the more that I load my wrist the stronger my wrist becomes and this numbing sensation subsides.
I also tried using a wrist guard so I could feel the proper position that I should be in but it feels as though my thumb does not go into the hole all of the way. I also had to make it pretty tight to prevent my wrist from moving within the device. Because it was so tight my thumb began to swell some and I was having issues getting my thumb into the hole. I decided to remove it and work without it for now.
I was also sporatically experimenting with my balance arm whereby after the push away the arm goes down and up and directly to my side. I had some good results in doing this but it definitely feels weird as I'm used to having it go down and then up and forward and to the side a bit. I wanted to see if by going directly to the side if it forces my body (shoulders/hips) to stay more square to my target line instead of opening up allowing my backswing to travel behind my back. In future sessions I'll work on using this more and hopefully it'll have more good results.
Towards the end of the video my wrist was beginning to tire out and I was experimenting some with staying up the back of the ball more, rotating my hand to the inside face of the ball on the backswing, etc. so please don't critique those shots as they were just experimental/for fun/to see what would happen.
Thanks for watching.
