I used to not mind cosmic bowling, however, I’ve found that if the lane is too dark, I can’t practice my spares with the rangefinder.

Rangefinders? Who has those at their centers? Only time I see those are on TV when the tour bowls. None of our 12 centers have rangefinders.

Isn't that the technical name for the dots and arrows?

I believe he is talking about the 40 foot marker at the back end of the lane... It is very hard to see under the black lights, at our center it is visible, but you have to really be looking for it.

Edit to add that I have only seen them on synthetic lanes. Not one of our wood lanes has them.

A lot of the Brunswick houses have them. They are the four markers down the lane after the arrows. I don't know if range finder is the right name to give them seeing how they are used to find one's breakpoint.

Of course he could be referring to the dots and arrows, and we are simply overthinking his statement.

I would assume that the reference would be to the arrows or dots, not the markers downlane on Brunswick's synthetics.

Once, in college, I was at a cosmic bowl type night, except no blacklights/glow lanes. As pointed out earlier in the thread by LudoMonster, I couldn't see the arrows with all the lights off. I happened to see a reflection about 5-10 ft past the arrows right around the board I wanted to hit. It worked out good for me, the lanes were older wood, and quite dry when we were there. Aimed for that the rest of the night and was lined up perfectly to the pocket and had great carry. It was the perfect example of targeting further down lane, it helped my ball get through the heads cleanly.

We have 13 houses in the Association, and none have rangefinders. I want them.

When I practice on one house, I have requested the last lane, and they allow my to place a small piece of tape on the lane for targeting. The local Junior Coach does this in training.
