For any beginners, I can not emphasize the importance of learning the thumb out first fingers turn release that Fred Borden first spoke of. If you learn the hand shake "10 o'clock" release, it is very hard to stop doing it, your hand will feel like it is behind the ball, but it is not. The handshake release will only get you so far where the thumb out first fingers turn release will take you as far as you are able to go. The reason is the hand shake release puts side rotation, but it doesn't put torque into the ball, this torque doesn't = hook it = carry, and makes the pins bounce off the side boards harder.
