My first week of league is in the record book now. This is the second week for the league though. I went in with no expectations as I have not thrown a ball in at least two and half months, and that was right after I had some older 16 lb balls plugged and re-drilled to fit me. This league was going to be at least 46 teams but a couple of teams backed out so right now its sitting at 44. First game was a 184, 4 pins lower than my yearbook average. It was all nine counts and strikes. I only had two spares, one in the first frame and the other in the ninth. When I hit the pocket I carried all 10 other than in the ninth frame when I left a solid 10 pin. I just had too many shots that crossed over and then I would be completely off on the spare attempt, but I only had 3 opens a 5 pin and two 3 pins missing to either side of the 3 just barely. I made some hand adjustments and somehow got me timing right and put my last 5 shots in the pocket striking out in the tenth. The second game was a 156. I had some bad shots, some splits and was late making adjustments. I ended up moving 5 boards in 3 frames to try to get back into the pocket and when I started to get there I started pulling the ball again. I decided to change balls, I only have two I can use at 16 lbs, a Track Triton Elite and Columbia Trooper. I started with the Track and went to the Trooper and moved back out some. I still made a few bad shots. Third game was a 165, for a 505 set. Again I had some bad shots, some pulled a couple out wide and a few times I came around the side of the ball and it would skid too much. As a team we took 1 point, making us 1 and 7 for the season.

Melissa, first Happy Birthday.
Next, about your smoking problem. There was a discussion on this board a couple of years ago about this subject. I learned from it, and when our State ban took effect on Jan 1, I anticipated a problem. As a result, I presented to our pre league meeting a proposal that the league allow a 5 minute break between games. It could be used for smokers, bathrooms, bar or other reasons. It usually takes that long to fill out the scoresheet anyway. This was passed, and has become a model for other leagues in this house. It actually is a motion in the by-laws for each league. We have not had any trouble since.
Conversely, in another house, I have seen fights and disagreements betwen teammates over smoking outside during the game. Control the when and where, and people will conform. Thanks. A 5 minute break in between games would be the logical solution - will have to be brought up at next years pre season meeting as I know it will not pass this year unanimously. Definitely need the majority vote on this one. I mentioned the 5 minute break last week and the people complaining were floored by the suggestion and said "we don't have time for that" - WHAT!?!?!? you don't have 10 minutes (between 2 games)? If you have to get up that early that you can't spare 10 minutes to combat conflict then maybe its time to look for an earlier league start. The problem with some of the women on this league is that the scores will barely be written and they hit start for the next game - I can't tell you how many times I have had to double check the screens because I was not finished writing the scores down. And the smokers are only going out inbetween games - not during. The only solution for this year is the rule about being up and ready when its your turn prior to the opposing anchor or you receive a zero for that frame or however we have it written - each team is going to get a reminder of the rule on their tables (smoker or not). It just simply amazes me - people cried that people smoked in the lanes, now they are crying that people are smoking outside and noone is really taking that much time to do so, in my opinion. I really hope I cool down about this by Thursday. Just like 2 weeks ago when I had to have the manager explain why the foul lights aren't on - the foul lights have never been on in my 9 years on the league and all of a sudden someone is going to say something. Its in the rule book - no lights then its up to the opposing captain to make the call. BUT that would require that they actually do something. Thank goodness its in the rules that I have permission to miss frames while I sell the 50/50. At one time they expected me to sell and bowl at the same time with 30 some lanes of teams (between the mens league and womens league) - I finally said its not going to happen, although it was kinda nice sweating off a couple pounds running like that (which I can afford) ha ha ha. Nothing gets said about it much anyway because I warned that I would pick a different team each week to sell if it turned into a problem - that shut them up pretty quick. Its going to be a fun year. Other than that - HAPPY BOWLING everyone - can't wait to read this weeks updates

Well, tonight was the first night of my new league. My friend and I arrived, eager to find out who our third teammate would be. It turned out to be the league president, who is also one of the managers of the house we're at. Aside from needing to do lots of running around, slowing our game down, he's a great guy, and a good bowler.
I didn't do as well as I'd like, but for my first league night in 9 or so years, it wasn't too bad. First game I rolled a 124, which started out looking really bad but I finished with a strong 9th and 10th. Second game rolled a 141, which is more in tune with where I thought my average would be. the really good thing that came out of this game was that I managed to figure out how to pick up that darn 7 pin....yay!! Third game I had miserable time finding the pocket, but finished strong again and ended up with a 123.
I didn't do as well as I would have liked. My spare game needs some serious work, I really need to get out of my own way more and think less. But overall, I had a great time. I really like the make-up of this league...it's got everything from beginners to experts...in fact one guy rolled a 280 tonight. Should be a fun season!!

another night of scratch league. Still feel like rookies in this league. I did OK, but the team was up and down.
The pair was pretty darn even through the night. Put the ball in the back corner and hope it carries. Shot a 214 first game, second game started rough, I couldn't get the Dimension deep to the corner to carry. Switched out to the Kinetic and finished with a 225. Third game was getting some carry issues, smashing the pocket pretty good but some solid 4pin and solid 10 pin kept me in check with a 215 for a 654 total. Only left one church all night so was happy with that, threw that ball 2bds to the left OUCH.
We won only the second game, our first and only win in 2 weeks HAHA. Think our team name will be "punching bag"

Tuba, I see this as a great opportunity for you. If, as you say, your teammate is a "good bowler", don't be afraid to ask for suggestions that would help your game. Most better bowlers are more than willing to help teammates, especially, because it also helps the team.
