we only have a few places around here that have wooden lanes, so i don't get much practice on them. unfortunately sectionals are at a place that has wooden lanes. What's a good ball to use on wooden lanes?

Same stuff you use on synthetics.

Katie, normally, you would get a stronger reaction on wooden lanes over synthetic as the oil will discipate faster.
I don't bowl on wood routinely, but have in a few tournaments. I have used my normal balls, nothing special.

humm i bowl on wood and i use a twisted fury. it makes a hard reaction on wood. not so good sometimes on synthetics, or early but works great on wood. weird. sometimes you have to move more on wood. oil does move faster and absorb faster on wood. reactive resin polished works good a lot.

i'll give it a shot though....

I bowl only on wood, and have most of my life. I have found that synthetics had stronger backends than wood, but the pattern remained more constant. You have to adjust and move on wood more, and the backends are a little weaker.

If you don't get ANY reaction on wood, my guess is that its not the lane surface itself but more the oil pattern at the wood house.

I bowl almost exclusivly on wood lanes. In my neighborhood we have a bunch of 2 lane, Hand oiled, wood houses. The biggest problem is that the hand oiling leaves very bizzare patterns at times. Also the different houses are oiled different. The one house I bowl has flat oil about 35 feet and the other is kind of like a shark pattern going all the way down to 42 feet. I just picked up a Total NV which is working very well at the house with long oil. I have not shot below a 170 with this ball in 4 weeks and I was only averaging a 154 when I started using the ball. I'm kinda od a tweener. I release over 32 and hit 15 at the arrows the first game. The second game I'm abound 34-35 rolling over 15 and by the third game the ball gets a little too snappy, and the further out i throw it the harder it comes back, so i move to 39 and roll out over 20. These hand oiled wood houses are a very tough conditions. We have brought in many 200+ bowlers that felt very confident coming into our league only to have them quit after 6 -8 weeks of bowling beacause they were only averaging 160-170. The few times I have bowled outside on machine oiled syntetics I have averaged around 180. Again I beleive you have to look at the pattern before choosing a ball. Also the drilling of the ball has a lot to do with how much backend you get. The ball surface finish has some influence but not as much as the coverstock and drilling.

Welcome, tonyj. Interesting comment on hand oiling. That is the way of the past.

So how does the hand oiling process work? I never considered that before...

Ok. They take the duster and wipes the lanes down 2 times. Then they take a bug sprayer and spray the oil onto the lanes. They let it settle for about 10 minutes then back-drag it from the pin deck to the foul line. If people are really interested I could take a video of the process at the Harmonia lanes and post a link to it. We also have a house that still has pinboys who maunally set the pins and place your ball onto the return. They put their oil on with a mop!!!
