I am new here and I'm not a beginner but I have no idea where to put this question. First off, I'm 16 years old, female, I've been bowling all my life, I'm on my varsity team at school, my average is 160 and I'm right handed.

I just joined to leagues to keep me in shape for summer. I just noticed that when I'm bowling, my hip locks, which causes my knee to lock, and after a while, my whole leg starts to ache. Can anyone explain to me why this would happen? Am I not sliding right? (I don't really like to slide at all) My shoes were just some cheap pair that I bought (brand new), but they are just a tad bit too big. Could it be my shoes? I will definitely ask the coach when I go to my league. Thanks to anyone who can give me some advice!

Welcome to the site, I have never heard of someone's hip locking up. If you could post a video and show me what you are talking about, that would help. A pair of right handed bowling shoes would probably not hurt, right handed bowling shoes have a rubber grip on the bottom of the right sole so your foot doesn't slip out from under you going into the slide. If that sounds like what is happening, then try the right handed shoes I have seen a decent pair from as little as $70 to as much as $150 for a pair like the pros use.

Welcome crid34. I've also never heard of someone's hip locking while sliding, I have heard of occasions when someone's knee locks though. In either case I can definitely see it causing some pain as it is constantly jarring the whole leg.

Where abouts in Michigan do you live? There is a summer camp here just for high schoolers, its located in the flint area. Maybe you haven't learn how to do a knee bend? As Jim said good shoe could help.

You are kind of young to have the routine hip problems that plague older bowlers. But, to be on the safe side, see your doctor to rule any medical issues.

As one who has a hip problem, directly related to bowling, my experience suggests one of two things.

1. You are probably bowling more than you are used to. And, you could be straining your joints to do something that they are not used to do. Exercise routine will help.
2. You may have balance problems by leaning too far forward. If you are on your HS team, ask your Coach about this. Another eye watching you can see it easier.
You may be too rigid at the release. You must bend at the hip and knee. Training will help.

First off, welcome to the site.

Second, did you have this problem while you were bowling on the varsity team for your school?

Are you sure your hips are locking and it isn't something on or wrong with your shoes? I had a pair of shoes where the soles were coming any from the shoe and it caused me a lot of trouble.

I'm going out on a limb here but if you throw the ball with a lot of force and you don't slide that much. The force could be trying to spread itself through your body and locking up your knee some. Kind of like what Dennis was saying about your balance and leaning forward.

Also are your legs tensed or relaxed when you start your approach? And your doctor might be someone you want to talk to. You can never be too careful.
