So your ball and swing arm aren't lined up with your target line?
Also my experince with having the ball centered led to the same results. It think what happened was that you unconsciously thought that you had to get out of the way of the ball, if that makes any sense. The ball isn't at your side now so you thought you had to get out of its way and that can lead to a couple of bad habits that aren't fun to deal with.
Are you also be having some timing and posting up issues as well?
I'd ask your coach first, if you're having trouble with it because he would know better than I would, and don't want to second guess him. I would suggest, and this is going to sound weird, but be as brain dead as possible to your surroundings on the approach and go when you want to.
It could also be something as simple as walking too slow or having your ball position a little too high or a combinationof the two. Or maybe you're muscling the ball a little. I really can't tell without seeing a video. Again ask your coach he would know or maybe ask him to watch for some of these things.
