Hi! Im playing in my second league this year. Though its my second league Im still new to league stuff. Can anyone explain to me what brackets are? I dont understand it enough to even consider getting in. My average is about 176, in this second league I just joined. My team mates say I should join the brackets.
Hopefully someone can help explain the brackets thing to me, so I can make a informed decision.

Brackets are like match play against random other bowlers in your league that also get into them.

Basically its like the NCAA basketball tournament. Winner moves on to the next game. So you start usually with 8 people, they get matched up randomly, bowl a game and you have 4 winners. Those 4 winners bowl game 2 and their scores determine 2 winners. Those 2 winners game 3 scores determine who wins the bracket.

So if you have 8 bowlers and $5 a bracket that gives you a $40 prize pool. Some are winner take all and some pay 2 spots. Sometimes the guy running brackets will also take a fee to run them. So winner may win anywhere from $30-$40 depending on the system used, and the 2nd place bowler may win their $5 back. Everybody else gets to donate.

Hope that helps some.

THere Probablly side bracket for like Hi Game or Hi Series for the night. You pay extra money to get in and if you win you can go home with some money.

Our Tuesday League runs quite a few games.
High game bracket for every game, both Scratch and handicap $5 for each
King of the hill, where you randomly select an opponent to bowl against, the winner advances $5
Survivor where the top half highest scores only advance, half eliminated each game for $5
Doubles pot where two people enter as partners and bowl against other partners, enter with as many partners as you want for $2 each

The next carry over from week to week if no one wins
Strike pot where certain frames are designated, and you have to strike in them $5 per week
Series 300, over the 3 games, you must get a strike in every frame $5 per week
30 Clean pot, where the winner gets all marks in all frames $5 per week

It is not uncommon for someone to spend an extra $30 to $50 on side pots weekly.
And, some have gone home with a few hundred. On a good night.

When I bowled 300, I won the hi game scratch and handicap for that game
I won every doubles match, entering with each of my teammates, 1st thru 4th payout. I won the King of the Hill, placed in the Survivor, Won the strike pot, and the series 300 carry over pots

Went home with over $400 net that night.

It helps out alot, to have people explain things that are going on in the leagues. Sometimes the people, in league dont have the time to explain, its either your in or your not. So thanks for the answers.

It should be mentioned that brackets are also a side event of many tournaments, including your national championships, the USBC Open.
