Hello all. My name is Greg, i've been bowling for 15+ years, been lurking on this site for about a year, and decided it was time to make a post. Just a few videos to get some opinions about my game from people i don't know. So feel free to critique, ridicule(for the IHLers), run in fear, laugh hysterically(also for the IHLers), or cure your insomnia. P.S. If i don't respond to replies quickly, please keep in mind that the first video is almost a year old, and i made it specifically to post here....In other words, i'm really, really lazy.

Uh oh, you are gonna get the 80's bowling style speech.

Looks like you are lofting quite a bit, and also hitting the ball upon release. I am also guilty of this, and been told to put my old school ways behind me.

Someone who's more of a coach can probably tell you what the most important thing to work on is, but here's what stands out most to me.

1) You don't let the ball swing. You look like you're trying to be very careful with your armswing and as a result you control it and never let it swing at all.

2) You bend over at the waist and end up with your chest pointing down at the ground instead of bending at the knee and keeping your chest pointing at the pins.

3) You try to generate all of your ball speed at the release by forcing the ball because you don't have any speed before that. That's because you don't let your arm swing. Now couple this with the fact that your chest is pointing at the lane, it's very awkward to try and do this because your set up to throw the ball directly into the lane. The ball should release as your arm passes your torso. If you did this, you'd drive the ball into the lane. Now to compensate you have to hang on to the ball longer and force it.

4) Doing this causes you to lift your trail leg along with twist your torso so that your shoulders aren't pointing at your target. You need to keep your shoulders pointing at your target, not 2 lanes over.


I wouldn't be surprised if you had issues with erratic amounts of loft and changes in ball speed, along with accuracy issues. You don't get yourself into a good position to be consistent, and it's especially hard to have a consistent release point when you bend over at the waist like that.

To respond to Desertdog, in the 70/80's, they used to call that "aiming the ball". You are trying to be too exact, and not letting the ball just roll. Your swing dictates where the ball will go, and you do control that.

Your final quarter of the swing is a hit on the ball, combined with the loft doesn't let your ball roll til it is down the lane. Let the ball roll off your fingers nearer your ankle without the hit, and it will roll much better.

Dennis you hit the nail on the head. As a 70's/80's bowler myself I have to fight every week to throw the ball not aim it like I used to. I want to aim the ball and many times fall back into that and my progress suffers because of it.

thought so. i've been doing that for years. if you listen closely in my 2nd video, about half way thru you can hear me say "OW". thats when i aggravated a groin injury. i had to stop 'hitting' and just let the ball roll. i just wanted to stop the pain, not improve my game, but sure enough, my ball speed increased about 2 mph and my hook got more consistent without giving up any boards. thats about all i've worked on since then. i know its not pretty, but i'm trying.

Greggas, your pull of your arm to get revs, turns your body and strains your legs for balance. Believe it or not, you should get more revs by NOT doing this.

Remember, less is more.

Just looked again. You could be better off with your fingers behind the ball through your swing rather than on the side. They should be at 6 and 5 o'clock through your armswing, ball resting on your index finger. Then turn to 8 and 7 o'clock at the release, once your thumb is out. That will produce the unforced revs you are looking for.
