I would have to say it's moreof a bad angle at which the ball hits the pocket. I've resently left a couple of solid 8 pins, and that is what it looks like to me. And from what I've noticed is that there is some deflection but instead of leaving the five pin the ball has enough energy to hit the 5 and everyting else looks like it deflects around it or the 5 pin falls straight back. Either way it doesn't take out the 8 pin.

Read the description, look at the pictures, and also watch the videos that are linked on the page. If the videos don't work, which they didn't for me at my work computer, they do have 1 video up on youtube. Here is the link for that video.

I was surprised the first time I saw what really happens. I'm wondering what others would consider this to be, a really bad break on a good pocket hit that should strike, or it really wasn't a perfect hit in terms of angle and revs that causes the head pin to kick off the right side of the 2 pin and then end up hitting the 5 pin instead of the ball. Was it a fraction higher than a flush pocket hit? Plus, could you even distinguish from the approach how the ball hit differently to leave a solid 8 as opposed to being a strike? You pretty much have a good feeling when you are going to leave a solid or weak 10. Or should we even be worried due to the fact that the solid 8 is a leave that does not occur nearly as often as the corner pins?

This is from earlier in this topic regarding a solid 8 pin. Its more of a bad break than something that was done wrong, maybe rolling out a little late but still a shot anyone can be proud of. There is a reason it is called the only True Tap in bowling because it happens on the best of pocket hits, while there are other reasons for other single pins on a similar looking but not quite as good pocket hit.

It could be classified as a bad break, but it still looks like the entry angle of the ball is off, and it is hitting higher on the head pin at least that is what it looks like from the video. As well as in my own observations, I left the solid 8 pin a couple of times, and the ball hit a little bit higher on the head pin then I would care for it to have.

As for the bad break, that can be true becasuse more often than not most people will get the carry if the ball hits a little higher in the pocket.

On side note, I do like that the solid 8 pin is called bowling only true tap. Now I have something to say to people who are complaining about getting tapped.
