According to Ron Clifton's power step timing article, I'm early. The peak of the swing beats my power step by a little bit during my approach. I will admit that I have a tendency to decelerate during my approach like some of you have seen in the past. I guess I'm worried of a couple of things: how my body will feel keeping a constant pace to the foul line, will I develop a bad habit of forcing the ball forward if I'm not physically satisfied with how it falls down.

Basically I want to beat my backswing during my power step like the article says. I'm watching video right now on my camera in the computer lab. I'm watching youtube PBA shows too to compare.

Do you think it's a big deal to fix that if my swing is barely ahead of me compared to my power step? The article says I should beat the swing as it's close to the top with the power step. I feel like I should and this is the best time to do it. I mean who knows the slower I get, next thing you know the swing will beat me in the downswing and cause early timing and we know that's a nono!

Depending on how high your back swing is, your ball can be just starting to fall as you go into your last step. That is how they teach it at the USBC Bowl Like the Pros events. If you have a free arm swing, the ball should be sufficiently high, and take long enough to get down, that your foot should still stop just before the ball reaches the ankle. That is the true test - if your slide stops just before you accelerate through the release, and your swing is free up to that point, you are ok.

The best way to alter your timing is to delay your push away an half step or so until it matches what you want, you will have to video tape yourself until you get it right.

Coach I have a problem with delaying my whole entire body sometimes when I hold off a bit from pushing. Nonetheless I'll give it some more trust.

Cgeorg, believe it or not I'm closer to that type of timing which I think was early. I guess I'm looking into it a bit too much huh?

My Pro Shop guy said the timing is not bad but the deceleration of foot rhythm affects it.

Well, if you are at what I was talking about, but slow down on the last step, then your foot might get there when the ball does, which is not what you want. If you have a free armswing, start at the point of release. If the timing there is good, I wouldn't mess with it. If it's not, figure out which way it needs to go, make an adjustment to either footwork or pushaway, and repeat. To check, get some video from the side, near the foul line, so you can see when everything arrives there.

Guns, you are going to have to have someone stand behind you (to your left side so they don't get hit with the ball) and put a hand on your back and keep constant pressure so you don't slow down or pause. It doesn't take long for your brain to get the hang of it and maintain a constant tempo.

Let me know if you are going to be in town and we can set up a lesson, I am pretty much available any time that I don't have a lesson or Dr. appointment.
