My average has gone up every year in the 7 or so years I've bowled (175, 183, 191, 197, 199, 202, 209), however this year because of my hiatus over the summer and not getting into a league until about mid-November, my average has taken a nose dive. It took me until about early March just to start throwing the ball right again...I'd have my moments, but no consistency.

Well, I've been pretty consistent over the past 6 weeks and my average has been consistently going up due to it. But the book goes in on Tuesday, however, and I am still currently 20 pins (189) under my book from last year. Those of you who know me through the board know I am not a sandbagger and I was truly disappointed with the way I had bowling. I'm sure I'll hear enough flak from the guys in my area who know me.

Will I have to take a 189 as my new book or is there a 10 pin drop rule for average?

USBC rule is that 189 is your book average, no drop rule. That will be in their database as long as your local reports to them. Many people have dropped averages, sometimes more than that. Some for real reasons, injuries and the like and others that sandbag one way or another. Some leagues might go back a few years though.

First of all, to have an established book average you need 21 games in. If you have anything less then 21 games, then your average is not valid for the next year. For most leagues that play 3 game sets, that's 7 weeks. Also the average cut off is April 15th., not 16th , not 17th. If you bowl Wed and later, then you need to go back on your standing sheet to the previous week for your official book average.

There might be some questions next year. But one year's drop in average is not enough to warrent a lot of attention. What does gain a lot of attention is bowlers bowling exactly 21 games and quitting leagues. If any tournament committee thinks it reasonable they will rerate you, its their right and within their power. As you get bowling next winter, and bowl tournaments, you might find some that have a ten pin drop rule. Its pretty common and in that case you might have to rerate yourself or suffer disqualification if such a rule is in place.

Thanks Erin...I definitely have 21 games in both of my leagues. I'm at 189 in one and 188 in the other...I guess I will have to take the 189. I'm sure I'll be rerated for certain tournaments based on my 209 book from 2007.

I'm sure my average will be right back up there next season...like I said, my game is coming back to form so it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks again...

Ours don't go in until June 1st I believe, and pretty much every fall/winter league in the area is over before then. I have seen a few spring/summer leagues that had to report averages that were only 10 or so weeks into a 24 week season. That is a bit screwy but those are the rules.

I am in a similar boat. I am down from last year about 10 pins due to many problems that I caused for myself. And, it has only been the past 2 months that my average has risen to that point. I was 20 pins down in January. I know it looks fishy when I have bowled well over 200 average the last 2 months and about 180 for the earlier part of the year. And, there is a large disparity between all of my league averages of about 20 pins.

Wow you guys have some stones, I had knee surgery in advance to prepare for lowering my average next year, so I would have an excuse, but you guys are right out in the open with it, man that's Bold, I wish I didn't care what people thought of me enough to do that. thumbsup

As we have learned from South Park this week and from Bill Belicheck if you get caught cheating just say "I did not understand the rules".

By the way congrats again on that 300 Dennis laugh

I'm gald to report that i have improved 10 pins from my pervious book of 172 to be booking a 182. Though i seen people in my league that have hit slumps bookingg 200+ and be booking 190 ish. Dont worry just give you motivation to get your game back and improve.

Thanks, CoachJim. Did you notice that it just got posted on my USBC Honor Score page? It is right above my 298 with a 593 Series, haha. I really loved that one. And, I still take some lane doodoo for that.

Wow, 298 with a 593 series, I don't know how you sleep at night, I would be up all night worrying about people thinking I am a sandbagger, and how long the USBC will ban me from the game, but not you, you are my hero. laugh
