HI Everyone,

I have a funny story about sweepers that I was thinking you all would get a kick out of. I had to move which means that when I joined a local league it was after they had started a few weeks. The last week we had sweepers as I believe many leagues do. Its voluntary and we paid our regular league fee amount of $11 to participate. There was a mens and womens division and both handicap game and series and scratch game and series within those.

I did very well and won the women's sweepers with a high scratch series (probably scratch game too but you can only win once). I may have been high in the league but because we had men and women divisions did not get to participate in men's sweepers (even though I am dual sanctioned). But that's immaterial and not the funny part.

The funny part was that when I was given my first place award money for high scratch women series, it didn't dawn on me until I was on my way to the car, that I had won $10! The entry fee was $11. So I actually paid $1 to win sweepers!! Now that is funny.

I don't know why this was. I understand you have to pay lineage and the secretary etc.... There were more men in the league then women, so their prize was more. The male winner probably profitted a couple bucks in his sweeper division.

Anyway, onto the summer..

I love when a league doesn't think. I know in the interest of paying down as far as they can, often they keep the prizes lower at the top, but your story takes the cake. First place should win money, even in the most noncompetitive handicap league.

One other point, dual sanctioned or not, when a league runs men's and women's events separately, I believe it's a gender issue, not a sanctioning issue. In some of the scratch leagues, the men and women are dumped together because there are too few females to make running a separate singles event feasible. In other leagues they opt (and they're always given the choice) to have a separate smaller division. The women who bowl at that level are pretty much used to the choices, and are ok with it either way.
