When you first learn to bowl in front of the ball return you count in your head your normal amount of steps in your normal approach and stutter step to simulate the normal approach which helps keep your coordination so you don't trip over your own feet.

It takes practice and is worth it even for low rev players, I have bowled in some tournaments where the oil was so long that you had to start the ball left of the head pin and just let it cross over in front of the pocket then turn in, or what is referred to as a fall back shot.

As impressive as it was to see him on TV, Kenny is even more impressive to watch in person. He's bowled most of the regionals that I've been in, and was normally at or near the top of the standings in most of them. You don't get quite the understanding of how much he does to the ball until you see it live. Poetry in motion.
